Default Project Car: Which One?

Hi people

As some of you may know, my EF just copped a T5, and is about to get a new engine. The problem is that at the end of the day, the car is still heavy, and is rapidly deteriorating. So I'm thinking of cutting my losses, and not modifying the car any further.

Which leaves me with nothing to spend money on. Booze and drugs aren't my thing, so I'm thinking of getting a car...

There are really only two major concerns: it must be lightweight (under 1300kg, but I can waive that if it has, or can have, a large engine) and RWD. Budget it also a concern, nothing that can't be had for over $3000.

The things on my mind are the later Cortina's (TC-TF body), a Scorpion, the mustang style Celicas, and things like that.

The Celica's look cool, the scorpions arent that bad, and I can get 150rwhp out of one for next to nothing, and the TE's look ok and can take a 4.0L OHC engine.

any other suggestions/thoughts?

cya
Ben

your about 6 weeks too late, I just sold a mitsu scorpion for 2500 already fitted and engineered with a V6, 4 speed auto and a 9" no rego no rwc.
The car belonged to a mate of mine he left it sit here for a while and asked me to sell it for him, was here for 2 yrs, hard to beleive I know but no-one wanted to buy it, then finally another mate took it, should make an appearance later in the yr. Was meant to be resprayed and make a return at easternats but time has gotten away from him so its sitting partially repaired in primer waiting for the finishing touches and color, then off to rwc then rego.

anyways these cars are out there so keep your eyes peeled for a forgotten project youd be surprised whats been done and what they sell for..

But they are torana's and torana's are old, rattley, rusty, structurally weak, and expensive for a decent condition one.

No, thats why he should stay with something more modern.

Turbo falcon 6 in the EF FTW. Why have a project car when you can have a superfast daily driver with perfect street manners.

I was actually considering doing the unthinkable and putting a 4.0L into a LC/J 2door, as you get a guaranteed torquey 200hp. Major work though...

The scorpion - We actually had one in the back yard with a 318, it would be legal if we made up proper mounts for it (speedway car, but no modifying of body to fit).

hey man go the mustang back celica. In queensland you are legally alloud to fit a 350 chev. Personaly i would getthe celica and drop a 302 into it and get some mustang style spoilers for the front and rear and then let the rubber burn. by the way even stock manual celicas can be a hell of alot of a fun and near on unkillable

hmm all these suggestions are reasonably good, but I do have a budget. How much is an injected windsor worth these days? One of them might fit into something tiny.

Another option is a 12A powered 323...

ben,

you would be best off buying an EB-EL 5 litre as a whole and transfer the running gear into something smaller. I think that would be the cheapest bet.

I have seen an EB 5ltr running gear in a ZK fairlane before.

probably, Then I can rewire the whole car with the late model niceties (like smartlock, delayed accessory turnoff, light on/off that goes with the central locking, factory diagnostics etc.). But still, you would think anything with an EFI windsor would almost take my whole budget on its own...
