Default Diff Matters!

Hi Guys,

I have an Au2 sedan and I want to change the diff oil. At what intervals should it be changed? What happens if you don't etc, etc.

Will undoing the bolt drain the contents of the diff out, or do I need to syphon it out somehow?

Also, what diff oil should go back in, and how much?

I'm reasonably handy and expect that I could do this job myself! Am I correct in this assumption, or am I deluded?

There doesn't appear to be any leaks as far as I can see.

Well the little blue book says conventional 6cyl axle SAE90 Hypiod ford spec ESW.M2C108.A orWSP.M2C197.A or lsd 6cyl..SAE90EP ford spec ESW.FM2C1006.B
or v8 xr ext..Mobil lubeSHCID withadditive friction modifier STuraco7098 should take 1.65 lts + be good for 100000 ks pending on your driving habits (I change mine at 500000 ) also easyer to remove back off diff to drain completly , if your carefull gasket should be rite to reuse with a good sealant......... hope this helps cheers Whoosha

The drain hole is the bottom bolt. The big middle bolt is the fill hole. Easy to do yourself except the IRS LSD version (fill bolt is high and hard to get to). A hand pump will make it easier to get the oil into the diff. I did both mine (Live axle, easy, and IRS, hard) about 3 months ago. Don't spill any on the ground - the old stuff stinks!

Thanks for the info guys.

JC, will opening the bottom drain bolt see the entire contents emptied? If so I reckon a simple oil pan underneath would do the trick. If it won't, would I have to take the whole back off?

Also, if I don't have a hand pump, how would I go about getting the new oil in? A 2 litre coke bottle with some old garden hose perhaps? Maybe a 1 litre oil container half filled, being held on its side, emptied into a spout, again with garden hose attached?

go for a drive, warm the oil up and just undo the bottom bolt.
The hole isnt blind and will drain the oil out...
just make sure you undo the filler cap to aid you.
the coke bottle idea will work with a small piece of garden hose attatched to it.
some containers come with a short spout that you can squeeze the contents into.

yes the containers come with a spout and you fill your diff up as full as u can before it overflows out of the fill hole.. much like the tranny

Got 85W250 in mine but don't think you will need to go to that level, maybe 85w140
I won't need to change it for donkeys years, 200,000-300,000 life according to red line
Will be 15- 20 years before I get to that.

Got the info from the forum - aaaahhhh sweet dependable forum! LOL!

Checked the diff, no tag so standard oil for me.

Got the oil tonight, off to my brother in laws for the trolley jack Saturday morning, will get it done then.

By the way, the trolley jack under the diff ok? Or should I leave the car level? How do others do it?

I change diff and gearbox oil every 50,000km...most cabbies seem to do the same.

I use Castrol SAF-XA in the diff and next time ill be looking at Transmax Z in the auto instead of TQ95. Not 100% sure yet that Transmax Z is ok in our BTR auto's??

Anyway, change oils regularly if you can do it yourself. Very cheap insurance IMO

You were dead right Baboon_AU, I got about 1.6 litres in and it started coming back out the fill hole. I reckon theres at least a litre and a half. The book says 1.65 but I hope I'm ok.
