Default Ford Drift Car

After watching the local drift comp this year and having a go in a few practice sessions I'm interested in starting next season.

I don't want to thrash my daily driver and don't have deep pockets for another car so am looking at a second car to drift. IMHO the army of rich mummy boys in Jap cars are boring to watch I find it a lot more intersting when average joe throws stockies on the back of their VL Turbo or XR8 and has a go.

I would really like to represent Ford so am looking at the Ford stable.
I have had XE sixes at huge speeds sideways down dirt roads so like their handling but doubt whether the six has the grunt and driving XD V8's I didn't like the handling so maybe a XE V8?

Was also thinking TX3 Turbo but how the hell do you set up a 4WD car for drifting?? Was also thinking EL XR8 but would the Wheezer withstand lots of abuse as well as the T5? I rule IRS Falcons completely out as for some reason I find my XE easier to put sideways than my AU.

So what would be a good Ford drift car? Or should I just get a RX-7 or Hachi-Roku

250EFI in an xe with a 4 speed box and locked diff will get you started, then later on add some stiffer springs, sway bar etc.. Power is no where near as important as setup

you can set up a 4wd for drifting but your gonna need huge power and alot more drive to the rears compared to the front. much more trouble then its worth


It all depends how much you want to spend..
RX-7's are cheap to buy but expensive to maintain. hell, even for 15k you can get a series 8 from japan although it would be unregisterable with whatever laws there are.
Hachi-Roku's are cheap to maintain, but hard to find parts and to get one in good condition its going to cost you around 12k-15k

In regards to having a ford falcon as a drift car? well theres one member on here that drifts an XE i think it is? but i cant remember his name sorry. Maybe a Probe? are they RWD?

dnt get a jap car mate, get a ford that you can get cheap panels/parts for (you'll need em lol) wack in a v8 and have fun...

I find jap cars drifting boring too, holdens/fords way more fun to watch...IMO Torque is alot more fun than revs... reminds me of a vid of a VE GTS doing circle work and just tapping the throttle while he's going around.... damn that sounded awesome...

check the sprints/ hill climb/ drift section.

there is a guy racing a v8 ea. get the weight down, come coilovers and a lokka, and you could have some fun!

Id try going an XD XE XF or maybe eseries like EA EB ED. Cheap and easy to get parts. Maybe even an old xr8 or something like that. As people have metioned stiffer springs and a swaybar would greatly help.

EA FTW, these cars are so light already, with a bit more poke, lokka and suspension setup they drift like devils

Id go an ED, find a manual, whack in a raptor kit, lock the diff, Some stiff springs and a sway bar, youll have a beast for under $10 000, with plenty of poke, and huge amounts of torque.

When you say locked diff do you mean just welding up the diff?? Won't that snap tailshafts??

Is the consensus V8 or L6?

6cyl to start with, maybe a turbo E series as skills progress. Nothing IRS, fixed diffs the way to go with a locker, as you said re: drifting an AU vs X series

Hey I am seriously considering a Hachi-Roku either that or an RX-7 though I wouldnt know the first thing about working on rotaries.
I have been looking at some Hahi-Rokus but I donot know what a good price is and problems to look for. I know I want a Trueno as they look better than Levins but beyond that?

I own an RX7 series 2 13b turbo, fairly tricked up. Fun car to drift. Its been set up for curcuit and its real snappy. Come on boost can peel 3rd and 4th gear all day long.
An 86 is a hard car to drift, you really need to throw it around. Drifting a falcon will be easier because of the longer wheel base, it will drift/change angles slower and make it easier to control/handle.
But I wouldnt go back to the likes of an older X series car.. to big bulky and heavy. A nice EL or AU would be the go.
A mate of mine has an AU he is in the process of twin turboing, so he can drift/drag/curcuit race it, for a bit of fun.

If you really want a ford, just get an old EA-ED, turbo it, stiffen it up and of course add a Lokka.

But You can get good s13's for less then 10 grand that will drift better then the falcon...


Im taking my Xr6 out on the weekend, it does well!

where do you guys to go drift legally?
i've tried going around the local industrial area on a rainy day at 3am in da morning lol. but it wasn't a smart idea. too many light poles around.

Oran Park.. not allowed to drift at Eastern Creek anymore.
Can play around at Wakefield, but its more of a curcuit track, if you start drifting around and getting carried away you could get kicked or get very stern words from other drives and the marshals.

There is an xe that gets drifted in victoria (Didnt read the thread so it may have been mentioned already). My xe used to get sideways pretty easy so I'd say go with an xe .
Having said all that you could always put an SR20 in an esky or corty and that'd probly go alright.

I have a skyline too and i wouldn't say I'm a rich mummies boy in a Jap car.. I bought the car myself on apprentice wages...

S13's are a very understeery car. S14 are much better.
a 180sx are a very nutral car very easy to drift.
R34 GT-T are good drift aswell, but you really need to provoke it to get it to step.

Speaking from experience.

I hope your XR6 has a good LSD in it. That can really ruin the fun.

Hachi-roku is Japanese for 86.

The AE86, a road car that made drifting famous... is often called Hachi-roku.
