Thinking of moving to Melbourne???

i went down to pyrimid rock festival at phillip island for new years and was ausome... followed by a drive back to melbourne and stayed at Bulla (near sunbury) for 4 nights and it was ausome, Melbourne City is way nicer than Sydney with lots of cool hidden drinking holes, better shops, better transport and actually nicer scenery with trees everywhere and old school buildings, St Kilda was fantastic and i cant remember that main strip there with heaps of shops, cafes, bars and most importantly cool cars... absolutely loved it.
My question is, me and my girlfriend are deciding where we want to buy our house (whether Sydney or Melbourne), now we wanna buy and stay there, not move again. What are the nicer areas of melbourne and is there anything bad or should know before concidering the move down there or to certain places, or to stay Sydney?
All comments appreciated but please Melbourne goers speak up! you live there!

PS: music scene is a big thing to me so thats important as well

mate if you love your sport and music, melbourne is the place to be. people are way more friendly and is just a happy city in general. i lived there for 19 years and loved it. i will be moving back down once i finish work up here

I have lived in Melbourne for nearly 10yrs after moving over from Perth. Melbourne has alot of benefits ( music, food, close to everything) but I miss the beaches. I also lived in Sydney for a bit and found it too busy for me. Trying to drive in Sydney city was a nightmare.

I love Melbourne and wouldn't live anywhere else now. I live in the Eastern Suburbs and love it near the mountain. There is alot of suburbs that are great in Melb...guess it just depends on your budget.

yeh fair call, well i did write i would be BUYING a house lol, so im looking between 250k-400k, ive already searched places at sunbury and there were a few there for round 270k but happy to spend around 350k if something i really like... just not sure what suburbs arnt drop kick areas as i am not familiar with melbourne.... i would like St Kilda but too expensive, ive looked. No further than round 30 mins to city

I just went from one extreme to the other, on the beach south of Perth suburbia to 86 acres out at Eildon in country victoria!

Melbourne is a fantastic city....If it wasn't for the fact my kids live in Sydney I'd move to Melbourne tomorrow....I go to Melb for work regularly and have a ball every time I'm down there...Nice bars, cafes and the Melb locals are 10 x more down to earth than Sydneysiders IMO....Only downside is i hate driving there....bloody trams and I've never been able to get into AFL

How do you not get into AFL? You must be going to some damn busy games.

I love Melbourne I've lived here most of my life and live in the North Eastern Rural suburbs. Land isn't that cheap out here either, but still cheaper than living close to the city. City is around 40 mins drive for me so it's not that bad living in the country areas.

Eastern suburbs are pretty nice but the monash is a royal pain in the butt. NE is where I live and I prefer over any other parts of melbourne. Western suburbs are probably the cheapest place atm. But not neccessarily the nicest.

Sunbury is an alright choise, its not that far from the Melbourne airport or far out of the city. Might want to look in the Macedon Ranges areas too like Gisborne etc

Slightly further out though.

bout 30 mins by car would be good, hey 40 mins too if its more appropriate. Ive never liked the GayFL anyway lol, the cafes and pubs are great and IMO i think the people are nicer as well, but you recon check out Gisborne aye? Any other decnt suburbs that might interest me?? I liked Sunbury because it had its own shops and restaurants and things that make up the necessities to avoid living right in the city..

i grew up here. i moved to Brissy for almost 2 years and i moved back again. the people here are so much more welcoming to new comers and theres plenty to do. theres plenty of clubs, music festivals, concerts ext all the time. infact the st kilda festival is on this week with lots of different bands, so yur music and night life is covered.

Melbourne its self is really easy to get around. i grew up about an hour away from melbourne so never really familiarised myself with it untill i moved back from brissy. i live in the same house i grew up in and i work in melbourne everyday at the royal melb hospital and its easy to navigate your way around.

you will have to get used to the AFL though... thats ok, you can be a fellow swans supporter like me

plus if your down in the next 3 weeks you can make the peninsula cruise, meet alot of forum guys and get to see alot of melbournes surroundings

anyways thats my 2 cents

If you like Sunbury, also consider Melton, it's pretty similar to Sunbury, in that it has all of the necessities to avoid having to go into the inner 'burbs/ City but is a bit cheaper than Sunbury, and like sunbury is only about 35 minutes from the city (usually takes me 40 minutes to get home from the MCG).

Also out this way, there is Bacchus Marsh, which has a bit more of a rural feel, without being much over a 45 minute drive form town.

Ahhh Melton, just like Sunbury just with a higher murder rate

The Marsh is alright though, apart from the lack of decent public transport (same as Melton & Sunbury).

Seriously though as much as I love the west ( where I grew up) if you need public transport forget about it. The east, north & south east are much better serviced.

I moved from Perth to Melbourne 3 1/2 years ago and am still loving it but like Geez Louise said I miss the Perth beaches.

Melbs has awesome nightlife, restaurants and love the bar culture. If you love your sports its awesome too - love my cricket and footy! The music scene is great with a few band venues still around.

Houses in the west relatively close to the city are cheaper to buy - new areas though so not really fully established as far as shops/schools. I'd say these places are a good buy at the moment. If you go east you have to be a fair way out for good prices.

I live in Yarraville which I love (apart from the trucks!) and would love to stay put here but moving to Scoresby in the east with the missus soon.

i live in sydney but have family in melbourne and i always look forward to going to melbourne just because people are eleventy times friendlier, you can actually drive in victoria without being cut off, sworn at or almost smashed in to every 20 metres.

i think if u stayed in sydney you would be wondering "what if" and that is gonna hurt more than making the move, and will still hurt more than if you move, decide you dont like it and move back

its nice to get a good insight from alot of people about this.... im swaying more in the direction of moving down, the only thing is all my mates and family are up here... and my social life is a big thing which i dont want to lose, i know you will meet people whereever you go but it would be through people you know which in melbourne would only be work related, ill have to make sure to meet up with some forum guys if i move down to start meeting people, everyone here seems friendly enough... i hope ha

There are quite a few new housing estates in the areas of Cranbourne, Carrum Downs,
Clyde North and Pakenham. All with easy access to Melbourne or in the opposite direction East and South Gippsland.
I grew up in the eastern suburbs but i prefer out here-still has a semi rural feel to it.

It all depends on where you work etc. For me, I live 30km south east, but work is about 15km drive towards town. Parents are 50 mins to the south on the Mornington Peninsula, sisters aren't too far away, my mates have moved closer to town/ over to the west. If you work in town, you want to live near the rail/tram/bus line or closer to major arterials if you drive.

you sound like the kind of bloke who is easy to get on with, i think youll find that:

a) you can meet up with plenty of forums members who you'll get a long with
b) if you are out in the music social scene youll find plenty of like minded people

Just to let you know, there has been 2 drive-by shootings in Gisborne within the last 2-3 weeks, but I still say check it out anyway, not known for a high crime rate.
