Ford adds GPS navigation mirror
Posted 2010/09/02 @ 10:00 PM By Spencer Woods  Ford has teamed up with Garmin to clean up windshields across the U.K. MirrorNavi pairs a standard rear view mirror with a 3.5-inch Garmin Nuvi navigation system. Ford is offering to set up this new system for customers, including providing power to this extended mirror. The obvious benefit to this is less clutter on the windshield, but Ford does have another selling point. They are quick to also mention that the suction cup of add-on GPS systems can announce to thieves that a few hundred dollars worth of easy electronics are somewhere in the car. Right now Ford is only offering this in the U.K. at £299 ($460 at direct rates) plus installation, but people in North America shouldn't feel too left out of this piece of technology. Aftermarket companies like Escort have been offering the mirror/GPS combo here for over a year. The major difference is this is the first time we've seen an auto company directly offer this accessory. It is likely only a matter of time before Ford starts offering this outside of Europe. As long as this is a legal device, MirrorNavi will probably be a quick option for dealers to make money. http://www.motobullet.com/news.php?id=10396

A friend of mine has a mirror similar to this, to be honest I thought it was dangerous; you are continually looking at the mirror instead of on the road. Atleast with the suction-cup types they are generally mounted further down the windscreen so when you glance at it your eyes aren't significantly straying from the road.

Much prefer the 7 inch screen in my FG dash to this , atleast at my age I can read it .

First its too small to read!!!
Second its not in your usual line of sight, therefor as stated, your still taking your eyes off the road, so its a distraction. Third, where the hell are the controls? Waste of time on crappy gimmicks...

Absolute waste. It's a mile away from viewing point, so no doubt our nanny country law makers will stop this idea at the border.My phone giving me directions on a suction cup at the bottom of the windshield is twice as effective (and safe)

When I had a GPS I'd mount it right under the rear view mirror, it just felt right to have it near a spot you often flick your eyes to. If this system worked in conjunction with say the dash mounted screen in the Falcon/Territory I think it could be quite good.
I'm surprise Merc or one of the Euros haven't installed a system that projects the Satnav display onto the windscreen in front of the driver, maybe on it's way soon? |

Using the mirror as a display only with the gps component integrated into the car might make them less inviting. GPS in mirrors are too small for me, I also find them more distracting. I particularly hate the GPS mirrors that effectively make the mirror smaller. Is there a cheap an easy option to display the speedo on the windscreen? |

I think it's a good idea too.
The suction-cap idea can potentially block other parts of your field of vision - just like a VE A pillar. Also, what happens when you're in a major crash? Is the suction cup strong enough to hold the unit in place? What about if the windscreen shatters? I've always had my doubts about them and never liked them. This would be an viable option for those that want to buy sat-nav but don't want the premium audio with colour display in the ICC. Lukeyson
