Default Drag racing in South Australia.

"If I had a quarter (US25cents, it's all our dollar will be worth by the time I get to race on a 1/4 mile strip again) for every rumour I've heard about a dragstrip opening soon I could afford to visit WSID or Motorplex on a regular basis!!!"

No, really......where does someone get some genuine, accurate and current news on when any 1/4 mile racing will return to SA????????????

I've only got a streeter, I feel sorry for the local Comp' car guys (who's cars will probably no longer fit into future classes) some of who I know have lost the will to ever consider racing again.

Anyone got the truth out there???????:

The only truth I know is that the consortium, who want to build the new track, did/have a meeting with the federal member for Port Adelaide.
Rumour is that their proposal got his support, which is true, because he gave a speech in federal parliment, about the need of a motor sport park
Everything else i've heard is rumour(but posotive)
I guess when your dealing with government department's, thing's dont happen overnight

Is money the issue? Imagine the first street night. Half of Adelaide will be there. They'll cash in. Be great for the spetator, not so good for the racer might only get 2 runs.

Latest dragster aust. states theres an up coming announcement regarding racing in Adelaide, hopefully its in regards to a new facility and not the mob that killed drag racing in Adelaide. Most comp. cars that were based in Adelaide have been sold off , Adelaide needs andra championship racing, not just street meets, the very nature of drag racers is development, improvement and to ultimately go faster , whether it be in a street car or comp. car. Andra racing will lift the whole profile of drag racing in Adelaide, great for sponsors ,even prize money.Imagine the first street meet, well imagine a meeting with nitro cars (mounds packed to the hilt with paying public) and you could be racing in front of them, anyway like in the movie (build it and they will come) competitors and spectators.Tell me about rumours i stopped counting them 5 years ago.

Yes - http://www.steelcitydrags.com/

They have just upgraded the pits in the last year or so and this year they are planning to re-surface the track after the end of the season.

In the CAMS SA State council meeting minutes of 20 Jan

The new motor sport complex slated for the Port Adelaide area appeared to
be progressing with the State Manager involved in some key meetings in

Well, the rumours about the meetings are true, I reckon its only a matter of time until they make an announcement.

I bet "media Mike" will save the announcement, for the election

thanks for that info AndrewR AUII

230kms from adelaide.. much closer than heeefkit
And I won't have to tow up the damn hill! Hopefully everyone outside the motorsport club will realise the kind of money this sort of thing can create and get it sorted asap

I have heard that it will start as a 1/8 mile and a year or so they will extend to the full 1/4. But i guess depends on the amount of funding they get on how quickly it's completed .

Headline should read "5 year drag race just starting"

Best of luck to the riverland guys, those that have stuck with it up till now have done well, but all I saw in the story was "blah blah blah, red tape, blah blah blah, more red tape, blah blah blah, need money, blah blah blah, need lots of money." :evil3:

When will local, state and federal govenrments realise that once a quality, multi purpose facility, sanctioned by national motorsport bodies and designed to meet present and future needs is up and running its financial an social benefits are on-going and spread throught out the public and business community for as long as it is operational.

Also, compared to the amount of spending that goes into "one-off" sporting, cultural or celebratory events for very short term gains to the community, other states have shown (Kwinana, WSID, Hidden Valley, etc) that with very little comparable government assistance these new motorsport venues provide long term ongoing benefits to the community and businesses. :
