G'day guys,
started the car up this morning (xr8 s2 ute) and the fan belt started sqeeling. Got up to 60/70 km ph and the car started surging. Anyone else had this surging? This is the first time ive noticed that the fan belt is on its way out, and its the weekend and i'll be luck to get my car into the mechanic before mid next week. How long do recking it will last?

Something is making it squeal like jammed idler pully, alternator, air con, maybe harmonic balancer loose, and if you keep driving it , the belt will break possibly causing more damage.
My suggestion would be lift the bonnet and see what is causing the problem. |

Is it the belt or the dreaded cam synchro squealing?
6PK2405 from memory, 10 minute job to fix. 9 mins of that is finding motorvation to do it too.

i reckon its the belt, only because when i lifted the bonnet to have a look, the bet looked like it was struggling at one point of rotation, but that was only a quick look. Ive never had a V8 before so ive never dealt with the cam synchro before.

mechanics replacing all belts. He seems to think the bearing in the alternator is on its way out. Anyone heard of this?

my xr6 alternator packed it in at about 194,000 k`s, which is a good service life i reckon, if your xr8 k`s is in that neighborhood it would`nt surprise me if it`s a bit tired.

its at 154thou so, yeah, it was a thought. The mechanic reckons its a bearing issue with the alternator, so if its a reasonable price to replace that and get another 15thou kms out of it it will do. No charging issues though. I can spin it by hand with the belt off, but when the belts on it generates a little noise.
Im intending on putting some money into the motor shortly in the next couple of months so im kinda hoping to hold out putting money into it until then, and get everything done at once, so it will feel like a new car driving it for the first time outta the shop. Friggen cars ay! love to hate em.

I had the exact same symptoms (squealing & surging). Mine was the cam synchroniser.

Hoping its not the cam synchroniser still. The fan belt was rooted, the pulley bearings shot, alternator was on its way out and i was recommended the to do the water pump, so hopefully they'll all be done by tomorrow, providing the water pump i ordered comes in today. If ive still got issues still, the cam synchro will be done. May as well open 'er up...

sounds like the belt may have been too tight?

water pump was alright, but formum members suggested the water pump, and i thought i may as well while everything was off. The ute seems it has been neglected, and has 154000kms on it.
