Default LimeWire file-sharing service shut down by US court

Lime wire file-sharing service shut down by US court

NEW YORK — Popular online file-sharing service LimeWire was shut down by a US federal court on Tuesday following a lawsuit filed by the music industry.

The move came a little more than five months after a US judge ruled in favor of 13 music companies in a copyright infringement and unfair competition case brought against LimeWire.

LimeWire.com featured a legal notice on its home page on Tuesday stating it was "under a court-ordered injunction to stop distributing and supporting its file-sharing software."

The legal notice linked to the court order from US District Court Judge Kimba Wood ordering the closure of the service.

LimeWire chief executive George Searle said in a statement he was "disappointed with this turn of events."

"We are extremely proud of our pioneering history and have, for years, worked hard to bridge the gap between technology and content rights holders," Searle said. "However, at this time, we have no option but to cease further distribution and support of our software."

Searle thanked users of the service and said "our team of technologists and music enthusiasts are creating a completely new music service that puts you back at the center of your digital music experience."

"We'll be sharing more details about our new service and look forward to bringing it to you in the future," he said.

The 13 music companies filed their complaint against LimeWire in 2006 and Judge Wood ruled in their favor in May. In June, eight members of the National Music Publishers' Association filed a separate copyright suit against LimeWire.

LimeWire software was released in August 2000 and uses peer-to-peer, or P2P, technology to allow users to share music or other files over the Internet.

LimeWire is owned by the Lime Group, a New York-based company.
Was bound to happen, although i knew nothing about it seems its been going on a while now and it has followned in the path of Aimster and Napster

i found windows update now uses "magnet links" that are handled by P2P clients.
possably to spread the load across multi servers without using mirrors.

Limewire was horrible in any case. Full of malicious software.

Use a torrent. They'll never be able to shut those down.

Yup, I stopped using limewire years ago. In the early days it was brilliant, minimal fakes and no unwanted software, but as time went on it got worse and worse.

Frost wire's been gathering speed for a while now. It's run by a bunch of former Limers anyway and is meant to have many of the Limewire Pro features added in for free. But pirates are bad

Same. Limewire was brilliant at first, then it just became annoying.

Usenet is where it's at.

Limewire? I had to check the post date to make sure it wasn't 1996.

People will just move on to the next one. Napster, Groskster, Kazza, Limewire, They are gunning for bit torrent, but can't see them doing it, which is why they tried with the iinet/AFACT case and try to hold the isp liable for the piracy.

Apple has shown the world digital music can turn a profit. Just not the kind of profits they are used to. Its time that music/movie companies adapted rather than resisted.

Perhaps if the music industry didnt sell CD's that cost them 40 cents to produce for $30.00 and a lot of the artists wer'nt so bloody greedy these sites would never gain any traction . Zero bloody sympathy for the music giants and the greedy bloody artists .
