I thought I would share my ebay experience, anyway I was wondering why the old ebay fee/cut seemed higher then last time I had sold something. Turns out ebay as of the 6 of may this year are charging their 9.9% fee (in my case) on the total sale price plus cost of postage. So if you sell something for $1 + $9 postage = $10 total, you have literally sold that item for 1 cent after the fees and that's not factoring in the fee if the buyer pays with paypal. Oh well end of rant I'll live and learn

Could this be why I've noticed more and more sellers offering free postage?

It's to stop people selling an item worth $100 for $25 and then charging $75 for postage instead of the $5 it would actually cost to avoid eBay fees. As a buyer I prefer this method, sellers I imagine are ****ed.

I understand that this was the reason behind the change. But it screws the average joe blow like myself who list things at what they are worth or less, then only charge actual cost of postage. Only to be royally f'd with a percentage fee charged on the cost of the postage. Not to mention that ebay actually automatically adds the cost of the postage if you say for instance choose a 3kg pre paid satchel it's $13.40 so your down a $1.33 in fees on your actual cost of the post satchel. I'll just have to pass on these costs in a dreaded handling fee unfortunately.

I have to agree from a buyers point, I saw a BF momo steering wheel for 250 I was thinking what a bargain untill there was a 120 posting fee from SA....Suffice to say I'm happy people like that can get screwed! The other honest people will just have to raise the price on the item to cover the cost of the 9.9% and let sellers know its ebay's doing

I've noticed a lot of ads now say "pick up only" and then in the item description say "happy to post at buyer's expense" or "contact me for a postage quote".
That's how you get around it, assuming that potential buyers can read and comprehend, which, in my experience, is often a big assumption. I have also sold a few items where I've negotiated a price outside of the system and sold that way. It's cheap advertising if you sell that way.

It does say "Copyright © 2014 eBay International AG." at the bottom of every page. Doesnt change the fact that Gumtree is great for people wanting to sell things off cheap or better yet giving them away free.
Plus most transactions end in a face to face meeting which I find much more appealing especially when purchasing something from a fellow hobbyist. Nothing better then arriving to get something and spending a while chatting about your hobby (fish or cars for me) and having a look at what they got. A guy that my brother sold a set of rims to came to the Clipsal 500 with us this year.

True, but listing is still free so you just delete and relist. Its a PITA but it works well to avoid the fees.... For now.

Multiply actual postage cost by 1.11
Explain in ads if you really feel like sharing why you're doing it with buyers. Problem solved.

read the OP again. What they are saying is that if you sell something for $1 and and you list the postage at $9 ebay will charge you 99c
So if it cost you $9 to post it then effectively after you pay the fees you make 1c out of the sale |

Slightly OT, but what peeves about eBay is many of the sellers. They run a NINE (9) day listing, then end it after 4 days because somebody made them an offer. WTF Dude? Do these drongos not understand how eBay works?
I submitted my max bid (of just over $4k) and sat back to watch. Bidding gets to around $2.5k, and he ends it early because somebody offered him $3k??? When I ask him why, he says "it was a 'cash' offer." Like I was offering to pay him in bottle-caps. So sick of dealing with STUPID people.

Just this week I had to report a guy for harassment and threats, via email, text and phone calls he has also been prank calling me.
I'm in brisbane, he is in Sydney and purchased an item off me for local pick up only, payment + pick up due within 3 days, he went ahead and paid with paypal and insisted that I freight it or deliver it to his uncles business 50mins from my house with toll roads. He got irate when I refunded his money and insisted that he lawfully owns the product and will come and forcefully retrieve it from my house next time he is in qld (he has my address) if I don't freight it to him (free of charge even though he has been refunded). I told him I'd use appropriate force to remove him from my property if he tries to come in. It's been going on for a couple of weeks so I've blocked his number on my phone. Another peeve is people who don't pay and you wear the fees. |

Curious about this.
If they don't pay, can't you cancel the transaction and then not pay fees? Or are you talking about listing fees? Had a clown list something and I won it. Refused to sell it to me as it was 'too cheap'. Reported him to ebay (like they would care anyway) and left it at that. Guy msgs me to try and get more money out of me. We went back and fourth till we agreed to a sum slightly more than what I won it for. Get an email 2 weeks later stating that the seller wishes to cancel the transaction. I replied and stated in the comments section that the transaction had gone through and I had collected the items and paid above the winning bid. I assumed he was wanting to do this to get out of the fees.

eBay is all about the buyer, sellers like me get screwed.
I've sent a few complaints through but they DGAF. Shame really as I have been loyal for years. I'm on 100% feedback and have only received 2 negatives ever (neither were justified either)

To many space cadets on the internet now days, I treat ebay like I Would walking into someones store. You pay when you buy/win you send them a courteous email being polite and you shouldn't have a problem. I once had a chinese seller try to leave bad feedback on an item i bought as when I got it the box was mangled and destroyed. They threatened me with leaving negative feedback if I did....
But other than that most things have been good I find its the private sellers that act the worst, this is why I sell on gumtree but even then stupidity rules the internet...

I don't think a seller can leave you negative feedback if you pay with paypal as it removes the option to do so. If you have such threats in email over ebay you can report them. When I have a problem with a buyer the simple thing to do is just not to leave any feedback at all.

I find a lot of buyers do not leave feet back, as if they DGAF. No matter how quickly you post and how good the item is.

one seller gave me the spiel of 'i cant leave you feedback until you leave feedback and if you leave + feedback then mine is done automatically'
i asked them if they thought i was retarded seeing as i had sold on ebay before and then left them no feedback
