Casio G Shock Watches

Young guy came into work showing off his brand new Casio G Shock that he had just bought for $500, me being a bit older, was amazed.

I never realised that these watches are now a 'presige' watch that command that sort of money, a quick check on the net revaled some selling for over $2000

I remember buying these at the markets in Sydney, like Fairfield markets or Paddy's Markets for $6-15, I have not been to markets for probably a decade or more, so not sure if this is still the case.

I think now I want one

I've got one, but it was bought off Catch of the Day for less than $200.
In the stores I've seen them for between $250-300, but never more than that.

Mines scratched and covered in paint so I might get myself a new one soon, but it must still be an analogue watch face for mine, no full digital here.....

I got a casio F-91w for $25 with free postage.

Thrashed it working on oil rigs for 2 years and its still going strong, one button went a bit stiff.

The G shock watches have come a long way with plenty of awesome tech.
I have the latest range man triple sensor. Cost @250.00 -300.
There are new models with awesome metal tech and triple sensor and GPS tech that go above $800-1000.

They are an awesome heavy duty , hard wearing and accurate timepiece.
I luv em. Have 3 in my collection so far. I'm a bit if a watch nerd.

I'd take the Tag Heuer over the Apple watch any day, but I'm into horological self gratification.

That's ok mate you've got to spend your money on something...why not on something that can tell you what time it is with uncanny accuracy in multiple time-zones

My G shock rangeman.
Luv this watch. Very light very comfortable and immune to almost everything I've chucked at it. No battery change requires ever.

Not a fan of g-shock...I do have one in the draw that is 15 years old. I love my Carrera Automatic though, there is something about a mechanical watch.

Will buy an old Heuer one day, it's not a watch, nut a time piece.

This is one tough mutha. Had it for 3 years now. swimming , gardening , mn tn bike riding, been dropped a thousand times , keeps on going and hardly a scratch to be seen. At less than 200.00 this was a bargain considering what it's been through with me. My son wears it as well now.....

Yep fair enough , they aren't to everyone's taste.
I have an omega samaster ( James Bond ) 300M a Tissot PRC200 , omega seamaster Polaris and even an Invicta sea hunter divers watch.....
But somehow , I keep reaching for my G shocks more often.

My Carrera is still my favourite, closely followed by an IWC but I end up wearing a $15 Timex most days.

I bought a Baby-G in Hawaii in 2011 for $70us (back when the Aussie dollar was above parity), the same watch here, $170.
A friend bought one last year for $190, decided she didn't like it and gave it to me (refused my offers to buy it from her, as she'd only worn it twice).

They are great for work, but every time I have to change the DST settings I need to Google the instructions, because it's so complicated.
Briefly considered taking one on my trip to Finland this year, but I wasn't confident in being able to change settings, so I bought a cheap dollar store watch instead - which I smashed to pieces in Norway.

That is the one I like if any, I like the analog hands, not a fan of the purely digital stuff.

If you're meaning the crystal, most watch makers can polish it out for about $50, new crystal ranges from $75- $150. Had my Dads watch restored a couple of years ago.

Titanium is harder than S/S but can still have scratches polished out, most proper jewellery shops should be able to.

Casio make great watches which are generally tough. I've had two in the recent past but was dissapointed when I wanted to get a simple battery replacement and it came back with a blacked out LCD screen.

That wouldn't be a problem but it seems they do not carry parts for long. So basically I was in a position when they farked my watch and did not want to pay for a replacement. But having said that such is my luck I bought an Armani watch and still got a dud

Omega are real nice, I like different watches I have few, I usually buy a nice one every 10 years or so, my Link is now 15 year old, Carrera 2 years, so in 8 years I'll get that vintage Heuer.

I have a Tissot Moto GP thing I bought in 2007, that's kinda nice too, wore it constantly for 4 or 5 years.

Can be an expensive hobby collecting watches. The Maurice Lacroix watches I really like too but simply cant justify the $$$.

I was in the watch industry for over 20 years and I can tell you most of the retail prices are just plain daylight robbery. The most expensive part of a quartz watch is the case and 90% of cases are made in China these days. The modules inside cost around USD$5 and are mostly made by the Japanese Citizen or Seiko companies or Swiss ETA in their Chinese factories. Really cheap watches use Chinese modules of questionably quality. The Chinese can make a man's metal analogue watch on a metal bracelet for USD$2. I can buy a Chinese copy of an Apple watch for USD$40. It doesn't have all the features but is GPS and blue tooth compatible, The only genuine beautiful pieces available today are Swiss analogue watches made by horological masters like Patek Phillipe, IWC and such.
Tag Heuer are just a straight out rip off.

Right considering under $20K you are probably not getting anything made by Patek Phillipe, Tag Heuers are obviously a complete rip off at say $2.5K.

Lets keep it realistic not many of us a dropping $25-$50K on a dam watch.

If you work in the car industry you can say BMWs are a rip off, the only decent cars these days are Rolls Royce, Bentleys and Bugattis.

I agree with the craftsmanship of the Patek Phillipe and IWC being genuinely beautiful, my sister in law worked for IWC in Schaffhausen for years. The Tag are still an incredibly well made watch for a fraction of the price, will they appreciate in value as much as a Patek Phillipe, no, but most Tag's are for almost day to day wear that look good casual or worn with a suit. Their, in my opinion out dated, reputation comes from using Seiko winding system which Tag have improved on and made more reliable and accurate. Yes they are not 100% in house but for under $4k for an incredible watch they are very good value.
I have been to the watch markets in Southern China and picked up great watches for $10 etc that are still working today. I can definitely see the difference in workmanship and can see why they are only worth that much. I wouldn't swap a classic designed Tag for a few hundred Chinese models.
