Default Oil Musings & Great New Gadget!

I just changed the oil today. I went for some Shell 15w/50 so I can finally (in my own mind anyway) settle the question I've had for ages on will slightly thicker or lighter oil diminish the valvey rattles.

I have always held the position that the thinner weight oil will hit the top of the engine earlier, quietening things. Others have said that a slightly thicker oil will do it. I thought I'd try.

Used to use Magnatec 10w/40 was no much chop.
Switched to Penrite HPR 10 Gas 10w/50, was better but still tappety.

Today I used Shell Helix Plus, 15w/50 and I'll see how that goes.

Also, for the first time today, I used my new oil filler funnel. It's square and locks in place. It was absolutely awesome to use, I didn't even screw the spout onto the litre measuring bottle that I use, just tipped it in. Marvelous!

I must be missing something, its a funnel... whats so special about it? Are you looking for praise? here ya go...

I like the funnel George.
It is a good idea, as trying to hold the funnel and pour the oil at the same time sometimes ends with the funnel bending out of shape and oil getting all over the rocker cover.
I use magnetec in my v8 and do find I get a bit of tappet noise every now and again so I will be interested in what you think of the shell oil

Of course it's a funnel, much larger than normal, and locks in place so you don't need to hold it!

GK- to get rid of lifter tapping thicker oil will not work, ive tried about 4 different types of thicker and thinner oils but no avail.
To get rid of it lifter noise you will need to run engine oil flush at least once and run lifter free as well to get rid of all the sludge on the lifters, even if they look clean they are not. Doing all this along with using a thinner oil such as 10-30 or a 10-40 has worked for my engine 160km and my brothers car with has 180+km.

Unhappy Engine Noise

G'day All,

Just joined the ford forum and am after some advice. Although I am not sure if this is the right thread to place a post?

I have a AUII 6cyl Fairmont with a 160K's on the clock, which makes an audible ticking/rattle noise when the engine is cold. It is loudest at around 1500rpm at 50km/hr and when not under load, accelerate and it dissapears, but comes back again at the same speed and rpm once the load is taken off??. The noise seems to dissapear or be nearly inaudible once the engine has reached normal operating temperature.

There also an oil leak up near the timing chain cover / front of the sump area, thought it was from the fron tcrankshaft seals? Wondering if both of these problems are linked.

Any good advice would be appreciated or a link to other threads on this huge forum - that can assist.

The leak will mostly likely be coming from the timing chain tensioner seal .... right behind the power steering resvervoir on the drivers side front corner of the engine ... it's hidden too ... it's the usualy cause.

I thought my leak was from the sump on the front corner ... but it was from the tensioner seal.

Maybe the chain tensioner is stuffed as well ... causing the cahin to be slightly loose and hence the rattling when cold.

Most people could here the rattle you describe.

GK, I checked out the link - I may as well add my name to the list of AU's with rattles. The descriptions are remarkably familiar. I reckon mine started at @ 145K.

However, as I have to get the timing chain tensioner seal checked out for an oil leak I will have this matter checked as well.

If its confirmed that its a 'normal' thing for my engine then I'm not going to worry about it and just live with it.

I suppose it would, providing the hole for the oil bottle lines up with the hole in the funnel.

Personally I don't measure my oil that way, preferring to use a 1 litre bottle with the spout. Remember those at servos?

You could get 1/2 and 1 litre amounts!

I guess I'm showing my age there! LOL!
