Default Nail Biters

Just wondering how many of you are nail biters?

Its a real bad habit of mine. I've done it as long as I can remember.

I have managed to stop a couple of times for a few months, but just as my nails are starting to look normal again, the biting starts again!

Anyone been able to quit nail biting? Anything I can try? And dont suggest that bitter tasting nail polish stuff, it hasn't stopped me before! lol...

Its never really bothered me as such, when I look at my nails, they dont look that bad, but when I see someone else's hands who has bitten nails, it looks awful.

Anyone got any suggestions?

you reckon?

I wasn't aware it would be seen as "soft" or "girlie" or that kind of thing lol...

It's just something I would like to stop doing if I can.

I started biting my nails when I was four.

Towards early university, I used nail clippers cut cit the finger off my skin. The skin in certain areas is thicker due to this.

I used to get real pleasure from literally tearing the skin off my finger. On the opposite side of the nail, I could take the skin down to the 2nd crease. Yep. That bad.

I tried and tried to quit for ages. I would bite a couple thinking, "a couple won't hurt." Then I would do a couple more. I'd be left with maybe 2 fingers with any nail growth, but would think, "they're a bit long now, time to much them."

Back to square one.

ABout 4 months ago, I simply suddenly stopped. Completely unplanned, no stupid resolutions.

Since then, I have bitten the skin a couple of times, but the nails have been untouched and the HUGE infections my fingers once had are dying down.

My fingers are looking better.

I thought I would be a nail biter for life. But I stopped.

I honestly implore any nail biters to do it. Your fingers will look cleaner and far more "normal". Well, mine were totally stuffed (mangled). But they're fixing.

My bad habit is picking the split ends in my hair. It's bad for my hair I know, but I have a metre or so of it..

Some people smoke, some suck their thumbs, some twirl their hair around their finger, and some people **** their pants.

But for a long time, I bit my nails. I feel I would still get comfort out of it, but I do not feel the need to anymore and feel that I would not get much enjoyment out of it.

Nail biting is the hardest thing I've had in my life to quit, and I did it.

Not about boredom...about stress relief.

Some of these replies are scary - the Bar is getting scary actually - time to stop reading about infected fingers and head back to the nice safe technical sections of the forums... LOL.

No, I dont bite my nails. They grow and if they get rough, I just trim them with clippers.

I reckon thats it....I'm gonna buy myself some kind of stress relief toy and carrfy it around with me. Reading on some forums, it seems thats one thing that can help.

I too bite the skin around my nails as well as the nail itself, which isnt quite as bad, but still a bad habit. Unless you haver the habit, it's very hard to explain why you do it...it's just getting to the stage where I think it looks really awful and something needs to be done.

Unlike you, I think I'd be just as confused in the technical sections since I have not a clue :

Your worried about stupid smartass comments in a thread with a stupid topic?
Seriously, who could be interested in who bites their nails?

Agreed.

Obviously people who do not seem to have much of an interest in Fords - and yes, yes YES we know this is a non car related chat area... WE KNOW. But that shouldnt mean that it is a free-for-all when it comes to ridiculous threads... the "non car related chat" umbrella is not THAT big....

There are plenty of informative, helpful and interesting threads in the Bar without a doubt. Lots of people use it as a place to ask for help in non car related areas - I have done so many times. Many people use it to socialise in some way in a sensible manner. People ask about how laws work, where to get certain jobs, for advice on relationships, how to fix hot water services, what builders to use to build your house, etc, etc... I reckon they are reasonable, just personally.

Threads about people farting, or chewing their nails and fingers off, starting silly word game threads, picking your nose or what time of the day you do a shyte - none of this stuff is helpful, useful, sensible or interesting, even though it is still "non car related chat"....

See this link for more of a guide...

I also used to bite my nails as a young child. By using clear nail polish I eventually got sick from the taste and have not biten my nails in the 24 years after this event! Damn my nails almost look as good as my wifes! Time to get some grease under them me thinks...
