Default Which dash cam??

G'day all. I thought there was a thread about this, but I couldn't find it using the search function.....

I would like to get a couple of dash cams for our car, one for the front, one for the back. As I want two, I would rather keep the price down...

Who has what, and what do you recommend ?? ( a link if possible would be great)

thanks!!!

David

I have a Navman mivue 338... Works great day and night...

This footage may disturb some viewers as 2 Fords collide right in front of me...

I also bought a Navman Mivue 338, Works OK but confusing to program, I then upgraded to a Navman mivue 388, cost an extra $60 or so but well worth the extra money. Has GPS which records your speed, position, G forces, and exact time on the video. It is also more intuitive far easier to program. It records in full 1080 HD.

If you ever have an accident that you know is your fault and your dashcam is running throw it under the seat ASAP.

From memory the 388 with all the bells and whistles cost about $230 at Dick Smiths

Good thread this, I'm looking at getting one. The video shows how invaluable it is to have footage just in case. Just like this one where it could be disputed whether the Territory ran the red light or not. Clearly the Terry did not, and the blue car was too quick in doing his right turn and didn't give way.

I'm convinced that is heading north on Main Nth Road at Sefton, but there are no desperados travelling at warp speed putting it up the inside of you in the lane that ends just before Regency Road.

Does anyone have video of night time? I think that's the most important part for me. That and how discrete are these? I would love to have a front and rear hidden more than anything.

My brother had a near identical crash today except it was front right into front left. Both he and the other driver believe they are in the right. But that intersection is 2ks from my house, and is dangerous to cross right because people speed through it all the time. And the angle you come round at before the intersection makes either car blind to each other, esp when there are people turning right opposite to the way he was going (which there were)

I honestly believe my brother (not because he is my brother, but because I know that intersection and the drivers in my area. Which is why myself and the girlie steer clear if that intersection for fear of that exact crash) Whether the police believe it is another matter.

All is well but neither car is.

I said to him "if you had a dash cam....".

Very interested as have looked at the cheap ones ..... $50 and below and also the expensive. What I am worried about is leaving an expensive one in the old ute and having it nicked!

When I installed mine in the GT, I wanted all wiring hidden - it runs through the roof lining, and the power I hooked into the sunroof circuit which sits inside the fuse box on mine (but you could use any power source under the dash). All up took about 90 minutes, and most of that was wiring in the power.

I put the same camera in my brother in law's VE SV6, and we did a similar thing but ran the power wire under the carpet on the driver's side and into the centre console here his power plug is (it only just reached). Install took about 45 mins this way (mainly cos I'd done it a similar way n the GT and so knew the tricks to get wiring through, but also cos we used power plug instead of hard wiring)

The front and rear pics each ave on the SD card in their own folders. You can set the video lengths to 1, 3, 5 mins or continuous, and it will loop through, so oldest recording gets written over if you don't save it. A 16GB card will give you about 4 hours for each camera at HD quality. You will need a Class 10 SD card otherwise the picture will freeze, but since using a C10, I have not had any frozen pictures (if you buy from the link I included, it comes with a Class 10 mini SD). I have had a variety of these cameras over the last 4 years, and this one is easily the best, Only thing it doesn't have is GPS and speed (for which I am grateful).

Tis cheap! Might give it ago! Does it look huge on the windscreen JC?

Why would you have a choice of 1, 3, 5 mins or continuous? Why wouldn't you just have it on continuous?

For checking video later, it's just easier to check through a 5 minute segment, but no reason you couldn't do continuous. The files are all time stamped etc. Also if you don't have video editing software, then the smaller chunks are easier to load up to youtube etc..

I'll get a pic from outside the GT, and one from inside - it's very unobtrusive ..... back in 5.

I've had BlackVue cameras for a couple of years, DR400GHDv2 to be precise, they're just now obsolete and while good including GPS, bump triggering, speed overlay etc they tend to overheat and the one in our Rio has gone blurry due to sensor damage (heat). The newer ones have apparently corrected the heat issue.

currently have 503 incidents captured, heaps more general stuff - might post some of the compilations one day
