VW storing about 300,000 diesels at 37 facilities around U.S.

Volkswagen AG has paid more than $7.4 billion to buy back about 350,000 U.S. diesel vehicles through mid-February, a recent court filing shows. The German automaker has been storing hundreds of thousands of vehicles around the United States for months. Volkswagen has 37 secure storage facilities around the United States housing nearly 300,000 vehicles, the filing from the program's independent administrator said. The lots include a shuttered suburban Detroit football stadium, a former Minnesota paper mill and a sun-bleached desert graveyard near Victorville, Calif. VW spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan said in a statement on Wednesday that the storage facility in California is one of many "to ensure the responsible storage of vehicles that are bought back under the terms of the Volkswagen" diesel settlements. "These vehicles are being stored on an interim basis and routinely maintained in a manner to ensure their long-term operability and quality, so that they may be returned to commerce or exported once U.S. regulators approve appropriate emissions modifications," she said. In total, VW has agreed to spend more than $25 billion in the United States for claims from owners, environmental regulators, states and dealers and offered to buy back about 500,000 polluting U.S. vehicles. The buybacks will continue through the end of 2019. The court filing said through Dec. 31 Volkswagen had reacquired 335,000 diesel vehicles, resold 13,000 and destroyed about 28,000 vehicles. As of the end of last year, VW was storing 294,000 vehicles around the country. |

Just crazy, if only the badge snobs new what they were driving. There's a doco on the Volkswagon group on Netflix (Dirty Money) shows how they were found to be using defeat software on their diesels.

Ship them back to Eastern Europe/China/Russia and basically give them away, flood the markets. It would be a way of destroying what little foot hold the US automakers had in those regions. Tit for tat.

1) store them in the desert until they go classic. If they are anything like Aussie muscle, VWs 7.4 billion could be returned 10 fold in 40 years (haha, they are nothing like Aussie Muscle)
2) develop a retrofit with TSI motor, resell them as cheap petrols and 3) sell the diesels as boat anchors for recreational sailors 4) donate them to the next generation of American demolition derby drivers, these cars have great safety features

5) Fix emissions and donate them to charitable organisations.
If VW is seeking forgiveness and redemption, that would be a good start. |

Would these these cars be made in the us or imported from overseas if they were imported maybe they could recommission all the b 52 bombers in the Arizona desert and load them with the crap Volkswagens and return them via airmail.

I got to ask the dumb question.
But can't they just do an ECU Flash to retune the Motor back to legal specifications then resell them back to the public?

So basically there’s nothing wrong with these cars other than they pollute a tad more than they claimed?
Well having 300,000 cars sitting there doing sfa, meaning 300,000 buyers bought alternate vehicles will do wonders in reducing pollution! |

Watch a Netflix doco series called "Dirty Money". The first episode is about the VW scandal, it explains the reasons why having the car running with the emissions as per US standards would mean the expensive pollution hardware (I want to say the cat but I wouldn't be sure) in the car would need changing very regularly (few thousand KM). The dodgy tune was for the longevity of the pollution hardware.

First off, NOX is produced when engines run really lean and efficient - mostly light cruise, not at full power.
Bottom line here is that the system chosen by VW is basically a NOX trap which is not suited to full time operation like urea injection to break up the NOX. So VW decided to save $300/car and just use the part time system, use a non emission program in normal operation and only switch to emission compliant when it detected an on-demand test. It is that work around and the deceptive conduct that's landed VW in so much trouble. |

One thing people seem to forget when seeing loads of cars like this, is they aren't new - some are up to 7 years old, and could have up to 200,000 or more miles on them.
VW were forced to buy them back from owners because of a US legal/govt ruling, which was more about the civil justice angle of the loss in resale value for these owners - and in the global capital of litigation, that meant VW had to compensate them the "before dieselgate" value of the car, which meant buying back the cars at market value. Many of them will end up going to the crusher. They simply can't "flash" them and donate them to charities & the like, as most will require some sort of maintenance & repairs, and if they aren't done, and something happens, they'll get their *** sued again. For them to arrange roadworthy inspections of all cars, repairs to the viable ones, plus the cost of correcting emmissions, is simply crazy money in total. To me this is more of a stockpile of legal evidence to prove to the US govt they have completed their task. Once the battle is over, they'll end up scrapped. |

Worse, all diesel models from 2008 0n are now affected so up to nine and ten year old.
They had to give owners the choice of either repair the cars of offer to buy the cars back and given the time limit imposed on VW, the offers had to be enough for owners to agree. Only low mileage cars will be able to be salvaged, the rest are basically on VW, if they don't fix them, they can't ever be registered again in the US. Quote:

To be legal, all cars require fitment of Urea injection equipment, plumbing to exhast and a new wire harness and program to drive it...that isn't going to happen to them once stockpiled in the open.
