Does anybody else use this product? Ive been using it for years on my old fords, lawnmowers, whipper snipper, and i swear by it. Teflon coating all the moving parts is the best form of longevity and wear prevention( cold start ups). Has anybody used it on their FPV? Now that the GT is well and truelly run in (cannot use slick50 whan running in as you'l teflon coat the bores) was thinking of giving it a go.

Slick 50 AKA Quaker state the company who makes it have been sued in the US years ago for misleading advertising about there product, Bottom line is Slick 50 contains additives that are mostly already found in you oil and Teflon should not be used in a Internal combustion engine as stated by the makers of Teflon

Thanks fellas for your replys, but since nobody has or recommends using it on our fpv's then im not going to risk adding the additive. I'l stick to regular oil changes

Slick 50 is rubbish. Ran it in an AU v8 to stop some valve noise (considered normal by Ford) and it just made it worse. Furthermore, a mate ran it in his fathers Silver Spirit with 60,00klm and just two years ago they had to replace the block (all alloy, $32,000 job for the overhaul). The ptfe in it actually promoted build up and restricted oil flow to some parts around the block. It was that bad that the cylinder liners couldn't be replaced, and the block had also warped.
Best advice I heard is to use good oil, change regularly and prefill your replacement oil filter with new oil so that you don't have the extended low oil pressure after a change ie, it takes longer for the oil to get around on startup due to the filter being empty and needing filling before returning to the motor.

If there was only an hour or so between dropping the oil and starting it up again, shouldnt be a problem or an issue with relatively small filters. Another measure one can do is to just disconnect the leads from the coil and crank it over on the starter till the oil light goes out...having the parts move more slowly reduces the chance of damage. |

I used Slick 50 in a Triumph Dolomite back in the mid 80's - and it make the car accelerate in 2nd gear as hard as it used to previously move when in 1st gear, it made an absolutely massive difference.
I later used it in a 1973 Ford Capri 1.6L and it made no difference whatsoever, so I think it matters as to how old the engine is and how it has worn. I am positive that it can provide great results in some cases though. However, I have no interest in using it in a modern car - I believe that the manufacturing tolerances on engines is much tighter than it used to be 20 years ago (of course!) and modern oils are far more advanced (of course of course) - so it has less of a role to play. My grandad used to work for Ford in the UK on engine development back in the early 70's to late 80's and I clearly remembering him saying that you can only use it when an engine is correctly worn in, as if you use it when the engine is brand new it will not be able to wear in properly. I also remembering him talking about a test where an engine was treated with Slick 50 (which takes 2 oil changes and a certain amount of driving before the treatment is completed) and was then drained of oil and run without oil as a demonstration. All impressive stuff in its day! These days, instead of spending money on Slick 50 - invest that money in a couple of extra oil changes and the engine will be much more grateful. |

Treated my old XF with slick 50 and it went on to do 400000+km. Overheated it to the point were i couldnt even turn the motor over. The next day started up and good as gold. Treated my lawn mower a couple of times over the last 10 years and it to is still going strong. I put this longetivity down to the teflon coating, and IMO has paid itself off and saved me hundreds. Personally i think it works better on older engines, and after reading some of the comments here, wouldnt use it on the FPV

I use the slick 50 spray lube on door hinges , it lasts about 3 times longer than a wd40 type lube before it starts to squeek again,so there must be something good in it for that kind of performance

Here's a video explaining how the Slick 50 name was sold but the original formula wasn't:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=CAt-tJa9P_s It helps explain why the later formula ran into problems with the FTC which is mentioned in some earlier posts. :-) Last edited by Slicke; 22-01-2019 at 05:59 PM. |

That's the guy who invented Slick 50 in the video. Not quite sure exactly how much more on topic you can be in a topic called Slick 50? :-) Last edited by Slicke; 22-01-2019 at 07:40 PM. Reason: Clarification and unable to edit original post |

I remember buying slick 50 in the late 80's to put in my Falcon. Then some time afterwards, saw nulon long term engine treatment. Started buying and using it. I read some spiel somewhere about the nulon long term treatment been put in an engine for however many kilometers. The engine oil was apparantly drained, and the car driven from sydney to melbourne (with no oil). The engine was then stripped apart and measurements taken of various surfaces. Apparently very little wear. Someone please correct me if my memory serves me wrong on the marketing side of the nulon product.

Always thought the Slick 50 livery on Peter McLeod's RX-7 looked good during the last two years of Group C racing:
Like the Moffat Brut 33 hardtop, it incorporated the racing number into the design. |
