Default engine build time!

hi all,

well me engine blew up on the 14th of january this year and it's going back together this weekend. pretty good turn around i think lol. i'll be starting saturday mourning so if anyone has any good tips/hints about making it easier for me that would be great. tomorrow i'll be getting some plasticine to check the p to v clearance, run in oil, au head gasket, low temp thermo stat and spark plugs and then i'm all done shopping and ready to go.

i'll hopefully be able to take some pics as i go and i'll post em up. so if you see any problems please tell me as i will be streesed out doing it and resort to alcohol yet again.

alcohol is good.

Don't drop anything in the motor is my advice, and make sure you set the timing chain tensioner correctly and release it.

Also run water for the first 800 odd km when it's back tegoether as this will make sure the head gasket sure properly.

well didn't get much done today. got the crank in and checked all the piston ring gaps and tolerencers. haveing a bit of trouble working out a few things that came in the gasket set. was hoping someone will be able to tell me what they are/where they go. heres a pic




1. is the seals for the sump.
2. o ring for the water pump?
3. o ring for the timing chain tensioner oil seal?
4. i can't work out
5. i can't work out
6. i can't work out
7. front seal for crank.

i have already put the rear mains seal in. just another question with that. is there anything that stops that from coming out?

just worked out 5. thats the seal for the dip stick i think. can't work out the washers though. anyone know where they go?

#6 looks like the 0ring for the metal heater pipe into the bottom of the thermostat

well i got a bit more done today. got the pistons in and oil pump, but it started to rain so i couldn't clean anymore parts, so i just cleaned up everything and worked out all the bolts and gaskets. does anyone know how many bolts hold the timing cover seal in? i think it's eight (4 long, 4 short), yet i only have 3 long 4 short so i'll have to go to the wreckers tomorrow. heres a few pics.







so hopefully tomorrow i can get the timing cover and sump bolted in and then paint the block. still can't work out those few washers though.

yeah it is. got it at repco, it's a high flow 1 though. i can't remmember the brand but i'll have a look.


so far the crank is in, pistons and rings, welch plugs, piston to valve clearance is checked, sump on and painted. tomorrow the head will go on and the timing cover. so should be all finished by mid way through this week if all goes well.

number 3 and 6 get used on the change tensioner i'm fairly sure.

6. you can use for the tinming chain tensonier retainer
7. front crank seal

now all those are sorted i got 2 more. any ideas



heres how the motor sits now:





i gave the cam 2 degrees advance to start with then when i get it run in i'll get it on the dyno and get the best posistion for it. anyway all is going well except i'm getting sick of cleaning everything with fuel. its giveing me a headache.

that sounds pretty good to me. they were in the timing chain can so i was thinking they might go somewhere there. well harmonic balancer was in this arvo with 40 Nm on it only another 85Nm to go! timing chain tensioner in and all working well and 2L of run in oil in the sump to stop it rusting. bit behind in build time due to cleaning everything and getting high on fuel, but all going well. left to do is manifolds, rocker gear and all that little pain in the a$$ stuff.

yep, building an engine certainly isnt a 5minute job, it takes a lot longer than most people think, especially the first time, which i guess is the opposite to s.ex, thats normally over very quickly first time round...

rocker gear just went in and it's still turning over, so all good. took about 3hrs all up and my left hand is burning from the fuel!

ebs 4l that oil pump is a JP performance pump. it's a hi volume pump but you can get standard volume JP pumps. got it at repco.

ok, thats interesting, i phoned a heap of places trying to get a aftermarket pump when i built mine, no-one could get anything.... so i just shimmed up my std pressure relief and took any clearance out the rotor

yeah i'm getting sick of it. but i wouldn't mind doing it again as i have learnt a fair bit about these motors and what works with them. i'll just have to see if it actually dose work on the weekend.

well it is in! now all i have to do is drop the tail shaft off the diff and put it in, then just hook all the electronics and the rest. NEVER DOING IT AGAIN!

yet to run it. i'm feeling a bit ill :Up_to_som so i won't be able to go to work tomorrow so it will be running tomorrow. still to do:

tail shaft
radiator and heater pipes
electrical
vacuum hoses
oils
throttle body
a/c
steering pump

so it's pretty much just bolt ons so hopefully i will be able to turn it over tomorrow. just hope it starts.
