Hey guys and girls.
I have succesfully bid on some FPV brakes for my BA XR8. It lists them as availble for pick up. I bid thinking at least if I pay good money, was willing to go to $1500 I would at least be able to see the guys, hand over cash when i pick up. This clown now wants me to transfer money to him via PayPal before he gives me his phone number and address. Does that sound sus to you guys. I have never bought anything on ebay at that price before. Sounds very sus to me Any advice |

It sounds rather dodgy to me that's for sure - especially if it was advertised as pick-up allowed.
I think most people on eBay realise that it is risky giving money out to a stranger before getting an item, and most acknowledge that by allowing pick-up. If it was me, I wouldn't be going through with it - but that's just my two cents |

Can we have a link to the Ebay auction? Perhaps you can view his rating and see if he has sold other items in similar price ranges and see if the customer is satisfied with the item.

Yep, covered up to $400 on paypal with that item.
Thats still a long way off $1325 price for the brakes Says you can pay the extra $80 and get a courier to deliver them, else pick up. I would be telling him you will pay on pickup, else dont bother.

The sellers details should be shown to you before the payment is to be made.
If not, you can "request seller details" through the "my ebay" link. Dont go sending money until you have his contact details and address 1st, and verify the phone number etc before paying. Whats the sellers feedback? its a bit odd that they are requesting money up front, although if hes listed the auction itself with paypal as a preferred method, you might have some protection on that purchase, be sure to read the paypal terms and conditions.

I think they get discounted listing fees, if nominating, and using paypal as there payment method.
These are things you should have discussed with him before bidding to $1500 methinks. Maybe he is sick of people bidding and not turning up......

I dont mean to offend, but in the payment section it doesnt mention cash. Only paypal and bank deposit, so that is how you have agreed to pay by bidding. I can see your point of view, but from his, if he gives you his address without you paying first, what is stopping you rocking up there and stealing them?

The only reason I can suggest for paying BEFORE you PICK UP is that, as a seller you can get screwed into an awkward situation, on your front door step by someone who either doesn't bring the right money or wants to haggle, or pick faults with the item. I have this happen once over a set of wheels. When the guy saw how shot two of the tyres were he tried to get the wheels cheaper. I stood my ground pointed out to him that the condition was clearly stated in the add, backed up by photos and that the sale was an auction and not negoatiable. But as other's have said it would be normal to expect to pay someone cash when you pick up an item, but you can't back out of the deal or offer less, you have a legally binding bid for that amount, and this will stand up in court. |

I understand thta. I have bought things before on ebay that list pick up availble and did not mention cash.
Simple to assume that on pick up you pay cash. Whats weird he wont even give me his phone number. I want the brakes but not going to for out 1300 to have only 400 garantee from pay pal |

I don't think its too crazy to request payment before you turn up to pick it up, that is kinda the way ebay works isn't it? He's probably worried you'll get there, see the brakes and not be happy so you wont pay, or offer him less.
That could mean he could he's just being carefull, or on the other hand, the brakes could be off an eb gli I was under the impression that if i ever bid on something that i had to pick up, then i would have to pay for it first. |

Pay him a deposit of $50 via paypal. Tell him you'll pay the rest on pickup. That way in the worst case scenario you are out only $50.
If he doesn't accept, leave neutral feedback and move on. |

Tell him your credit card expired and you haven't updated it on PayPal yet. So, if you pay by PayPal it would be a PayPal e-cheque (coming from your Bank Account) and might take up to a week to be cleared. So, it would be quicker and easier if you just rocked up and payed cash.
I noticed the same that he doesn't actually mention cash as a payment option and you can't imply that. |

Can understand why he wants payment first but refusing to give even phone number a bit sus. Problem is that you're bid is legally binding. Think you're just gonna have to run on some faith here mate. Good luck! Be sure to post the result.

I think the right thing to do is to see how much you can be covered for through paypal, pay the guy the full amount via paypal and then go to pick it up. If the brakes aren't as described then dont pick them up and do what you can to get your money back.
If you were buying something through an ad in a newspaper it is fair to assume you could pay cash when you pick the item up, but thats not how ebay works unless you have organized something beforehand with the seller. In hindsight it probably would have been a good idea to work this out before you bid but shhit happens IMO it doesn't look like a scam. |

COD!! [cash on delivery] thats the way to do it. He sends them & you pay when they arrive. Thats how I do most of my buying on Ebay, then theres no risk to you at all..
