After another hard week at work, there's one last thing to do before your home n hosed in weekend mode... You need to settle the hulk Friday issue!!... Nothing eases you into the weekend and takes your mind off things like hulk Friday does.. So here we go
We all saw the last FG GT351 go under the hammer and sold for $236000... Money goes to charity, great cause.. I have no doubt the owner knows he basically donated $160k to charity and bought a car for $76000.. We can all accept that as good form. When it comes to sell he will know the money he has donated. Congratulations to the new owner, as it's for charity a great achievement. But what about those that overcapitalise on falcons for non factory mods??.. Sometimes Spending the market value of the car many times over, usually to run quick times down the quarter mile. Is this a very narrow minded view as they are basically ignoring the better cars they can buy for the money? Further Many choose to heavily modify a GT or a tickford car and really reduce their value as future buyers are not interested in highly modified cars, modified flagship models are usually considered as molestered. Also at the end if the day, they will just be a falcon no matter what you spend on them, go try and trade them in afterwoods. Where do you draw the line? We all love modding our cars but to different degrees? But what is appropriate? I think spending anything more than 50% of the market value of a car on mods is getting a little ridiculous. It's probably the point where your spending too much. Do we need to stop living under a shell and first look at what other cars can be had for the total intended spend? (If excessive spend is planned) |

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Different cars hold different meanings for different people.

Who cares?
I doubt anybody on here is expecting to get their money back for anything they do to their cars. And nobody is modding them to sell them. They're modding them to enjoy them themselves. I'm sure as hell not doing stuff to my 1993 DC expecting to get a return on any of it. I'm doing it to make it an awesome cruiser for myself.

Hulk, most of the folk on the AFF do a bit of tweeking here and there. Sure some put a lot of dough into making their ride faster. Me, I spent $ making my ride quieter and the basic audio better.
If I were to grab hold of a GT+ type Ford, sure, I'd leave it alone (but would throw in the sound deadener ). I figure such subtle mods would not eliminate the car from stock.

In most cases a heavily modded say F6 or S/C GT will bury any factory offering unless you are in the market for a F111.
Car 70K + 20K mods = 10 second car. How many 10 second cars are available for $100K, start with a second hand car like an XR6T it may only cost $50K. In any case in a few years if you want a newish 10 second family hack there will be little choice without a falcodore. |

The secret is to modify your car and then brag when you beat a standard car.

Some people spend money on their cars that they know they will never see again. Severely overcapitalise, basically box themselves in
it seems all they are interested in is bragging rights, I have the most power or im the quickest or just to say any mod out there is done on their car. They think if you dont have that mod you dont get an opinion. but they just dont realise they are preaching to a community who drives an average car.. most people chuckle and think to themselves if I was to spend that sort of money id be driving a new/newish BMW/Mercedes or Audi not an old b series or AU in some cases. Id rather say Vorsprung durch Technik not "I can run 10s with my bigger turbo or kenne belle" They dont consider what they could actually have for their money. They want the best house in the worst street.... id rather have the worst house in the best street. |

Im one of those Hulk, though not necessarily Falcons.
Every car I buy will see me spend more getting it to where I like it, often to just get bored and move it on at a loss. Mind you, I only buy second hand so what I spend would be nothing compared to the depreciation felt by the person who bought it new. And nothing depreciates like a new Falcon, unfortunately. As long as you go in with your eyes open and understand that 99% of cars are depreciating assets and mods add nothing of real value (modification that is...lol), your all good. |

Firstly, I'd like to congratulate Hulk on yet another superb thread. If only more of you would put some thought into thread starting as Hulk does, we could make AFF an even better place than it already is.
Well done Hulk, I'm going to nominate you for thread starter of the year. Quote:

It's perhaps more narrow minded to not accept their choices. Personally I do feel there's a sensible limit as to what should be spent on certain cars, and I would prefer to spend more on a car which is more capable, however each to their own. Quote:
I shed a tear at some of the things people have done to rare and exclusive cars. But again, each to their own, and we must respect every ones choices. Quote:
I mean that in the most respectful way as I love my Falcons, however I recognise they are no BMW. Quote:

Personally I wouldn't spend any where near an additional 30k on a 60k car. However I wouldn't hesitate to spend more than 5k on a 10k car. Quote:
I think totally re-engineering a car to make it something it wasn't meant to do is a bit pointless, particularly when an alternate car is available for less money. Some simply like to prove a point though, or just like that particular car, and that's ok too. It's not up to anyone else what we do with our cars.

Someone has already offered him $100,000 over what he paid (you should have bought it Hulk).
That = $336,000 I doubt he will ever sell it.

To some its a Hobby Hulk, and to get that personalised feeling when you look at your ride.
There are far worse Hobbies, like going to crown casino for instance.

What car show would you rather go to, one were it was just amg c63s all stock lined up side by side or a bunch of falcons all modified in there own way, reflecting what the owners goals were? Some are jam packed with stereo, some with paint/bodykits and some stuffed with so much motor just the thought of hearing it run sends a tingle down your spine. I know were I will be.
People can do what they want with there money. Just because someone only has 10 grand to play with so buys an au for $500 and blows the rest making it his doesn't mean he is wrong for not buying a supposed better car

If people worried more about what they did rather than what others do, the world would be a better place to live.
Hulk, get it out of your head that cars are bought as investment. Many here DO NOT CARE how much money they spend, what it is worth and don't get upset when they sell at a loss. Hard to comprehend I know but car enthusiasts spend money for FUN. Its called enjoying your hobby and if you sit and add up your receipts with a sweat, your doing it for the wrong reasons. Couldn't give a toss how much I have spent over the years. Haven't added it up. Haven't done it so I could recoup later. Doing it for now. Not selling so who cares? My Mrs has a 'hobby' called 'Collecting shoes and handbags'. It makes her happy, she wont be selling them and they also are worth nothing once used. She is happy which makes me happy so in the end, the whole family is happy. Sometimes things that make someone happy does not have a budget. If you can afford it without the worry and it puts a smile on your face .... do it. No one else has the right to say someone else has spent too much. No one else's problem! Cars are NOT an investment.

i have spent more than 50% above market value hotting up my GT
I will probably be the last owner as i have no interest in selling it. I will probably spend still more money on hotting it up further as the years go by |
