hi guys... i want to network two computers at my house, and i don't know which type of cable to use (i'm connecting one network card directly to another)

anyone know much about this? cheers

Ye be needing a crossover CAT-5 cable and ye thinking cap!!!

Yeah either using a crossover cat 5 cable or get wireless and use peer to peer networking

ye be need what is called a Crossover cable, these can be bought very cheaply just about anywhere, connect the two together set up your ip's within the same range, set the same workgroup and you should be able to start sharing.

so that's why it isnt working... i looked at the writing along the cable and saw the word "patch"... that's what the pr**k at dick smiths sold me! i asked him and he said it's the right one... idiot

its a possible reason.. A crossover will work, a straight cable may work wirh some NIC (network cards)

Same workgroup !
Same Subnet !
Different IP!

If you have XP2 service pack 2 you'll have to setup the firewall.

Do a few more checks before racing back to DSE and abusing the goose with pimples. DSE usually have red end covers on their overpriced crossover cables.

Yar, if you think your gonna ever get more than 2 computers next to each other, buy yee a hub , 25$ from ebay and enjoy 100mbs connection. Otherwise yee bee needing wireless network card.

If you had 1Gbit cards, most of them support MDI/MDX connections which means that you could use a patch cable. But otherwise 100Mbit you will need a crossover.

while ye all be on the subject im havin troubles settin up my ad-hoc wireless connections between me laptop and me home computer

apart from the two network cards what else does one need?

2 computers!,

Load netstumbler and it may give you a clue... Read pages of docs, and where possible use the same brand of equipment.

What is the specific problem you are having? Sometimes you could be having interference between other devices (microwave, cordless phones, neighbours access points)

the two can not find each other (or my software is not set up right for them to connect to each other)
it's not interference,
does one have to be set up as a server and one a client? if so how?

If you are using two network cards, they need to be in "peer to peer" mode or something similar depending on the product you are using.

I found it was easiest to use the microsoft configuration utility for wireless networks. Go to "Network Connections" under "Control Panel" and there should be an icon saying "Wireless Network Connection" with a red X in it if it is not connecting. Double click on it, and see if you can connect to any of the networks listed in the dialog box. Otherwise click "Advanced..." and on the "Wireless Networks" tab click the "Add..." button to add information about your network. See if you can configure both systems to be the same and see if that helps. Make sure you use "Ad Hoc" for system to system communication if you don't have a Wireless Access Point.

I've found if it's only two, use a direct network cable and a bit of changing of ya settings and bingo! Just make sure you turn your firewall off when networking then back on before you go on the net
