Bad-They look like what a dog would throw up :
Good-One did overtake my TX5 whilst I was in a 50 zone and obeying the limit. Was a different story once it came to the 100 zone :

Worst thing Ford has put out as far as I'm concerned on design alone and I've never driven one. This thing tops the AU a 1000 times over!

Not quite that Simple Sean.

The Ka actually was not a bad car at all. The 1.3 litre Endura E engine was its greatest downfall as it was a SOHC lawnmower engine, and a pretty close decendent of the age old "Kent" Motor, It was slow and pretty crap.

Another thing that Ka was bagged for was its failure to be sold with an auto trans. That genuinely hampered it's Australian sales.

However, to this day, the Ford Ka is known as one of the best handling small Fords made, they very quietly benchmark a lot of their tuning on that car. Only problem being that it just didn't have the engine to exploit it.

They're pretty well put together and have a tried and tested engine, so I doubt your mate will have any dramas with it. ;)

Its definitley ugly. But its not a bad quality car and its not a bad car to drive. The steering is pretty nice and its not bad all things considered. Very slow though.

I wouldn't say its the worst thing Ford's put out. The Ford Festiva built by Kia was a far worse car then the Ka. So was the Taurus.

SOHC? Not quite...

Ka engine specs in Australia were...

1299cc OHV Pushrod 8-valve (2v/cyl) Transverse chain-driven, cast-iron four-cylinder

74mm bore, 75.5mm stroke
9.5:1 compression ratio

43kW @ 5000rpm
100Nm @ 2500rpm

Mmm... 1.3L Pushrod four that can't rev at all.... tasty engine. Considering its size and weight, it was actually pretty thirsty. I wouldn't buy one based on fuel saving merit. The lack of power would keep it high in the revs all the time and its not very economical for a 955kg 1.3litre 4-cylinder economy car.

Agree with what you said about the handling though, it handles rather well.
