Default largest rim size on EL??

i went to a place last week enquiring about 19"s and they said the largest they could fit on an EL is 18's, they said they tried 19"s and they wouldnt fit unless u made sum type of mod, is this true?? or do u think that 19"s would just have fatter tyres like 245/255 or sumthing. i was thinkin that u could get 19"s with 235 wide maybe?

I work at bob jane and 19" wheels will fit, depending how low your car is you might need to roll the guards, we fitted 20s on a el as well.

who didnt care?
vic roads or insurance company? i couldn't actually find any regulations reguarding rim size, only overall diametre.
insurance is a different story, but obviously differs by insurance company

Both, I gave them all the dimensions (when I had the EL this was) and neither Vicroads or RACV would have a bar of it.

You are allowed 1" wider than the largest rim available on that model.

I don't know whether or not there's a rule for larger diameter, but with larger diameter, usually comes larger width.

EL GT had 17 x 8.5, so the largest wheel you could go would be X x 9.5".

EL XR8 and XR6 had 17 inch rims, so that model car had 17's as an option therefore 19's should be legal.

EL XR8 had 16's, the GT had 17's and the rule is just under 2" just to annoy people.

I woulda kicked up a big fuss and asked to speak to someone who knew what they were on about. As john said, there's nothing in the regulations regarding RIM diameter, only overall tyre diameter. Ask them to show you exactly were it says that you can't have 19's. I know Turbo Tony wen't to vic roads regarding the offset placement of his number plate, the woman at the counter said he hadto move it and he asked to speak to someone else. The guy said it was all good and didn't infringe on any of the regulations...

from what i understand the rule is + or - 15mm of the rolling diameter of the tyre.
so if you go 19's than your profile will have too be fairly small, like 35 or so.

Yep. Some cops with no idea still seem to go by this 2" larger myth, but even if they insist on defecting you take it up with their senior or Vicroads and you'll get off....a mate had a cop pull him in over in a non-turbo silvia and he spent 20 minutes looking for the turbo insisting that all those cars were turbo! Some cops just have no idea of the rules they are meant to be enforcing

And cops are supposed to know everything about every car are they?

if they're trying to enforce a rule, then they should know everything required to enforce that rule.
defecting a non-turbo car while looking for a turbo seems like something he should learn, otherwise don't make the comment about them all being turbo

The load rating on 19" tyres will be what kills you and what they will defect you on. The actual rim size in diameter is a grey area but the load and sped ratings are in black and white which they will get you on.
They do make tyres in a 19" that do have the correct ratings but they is not cheap!
