Default 2007 Focus LS Zetec - Engine Systems Fault

Hi all,

Hoping somebody can assist in diagnosing an issue I'm having with my car.

As the title suggests, I have a 2007 Focus LS Zetec and I've been getting this 'Acceleration Reduced - Engine Systems Fault' message. It's not always, and generally ONLY when the engine is cold.

For a while it was totally fine until I had a passenger in the front seat, and zing! Engine Systems Fault! Which is immensely weird as the car doesn't have any kind of seat electronics... From what I can gather it doesn't even bitch if someone is sitting there without a seatbelt on.

Anyway, once the error hits, often I find myself driving until the car is at running temp, then either pulling over or waiting until I'm stopped at some lights to turn the car off and start it up again - then it's fine. Sometimes also if it's cold I can start it around 3-6 times and it will come good.

I don't suppose anyone has any suggestions or can point me in the right direction?

You need the vehicle scanned for DTC fault codes when the vehicle is faulting to give some sort of direction on the cause. It could be due to many factors..

Okay, I assume this is different to OBD and I can't use my OBD2 scanner to find the fault?

Start with scanning for codes

So scanning for codes does stuff all because it's not an OBDII thing and doesn't provide an engine light.

However I found the culprit.
If I plug in my phone to charge - BAM, instantly Engine Systems Fault.

I originally thought it was odd regarding my partner being in the car as per my original post, however after discovering this it clicked, when she's in the car we're generally going somewhere, so GPS is up on the phone and it's plugged in.

Dash cam can be plugged into the same USB thing with zero issues, but the power draw of charging a phone kicks a stink.

Anyone have any suggestions on why it might be happening and what I may be able to do to fix it?

Could be the instrument cluster... I have the same issue. I removed the cluster, opened it, sprayed it all with contact cleaner and fixed it for a while. Came up again about a month later, so this time I soldered the connector... this might fix it, if not, second hand cluster will be the next option.
I think the CANBUS runs through the cluster to get to the ECU.. so that would explain all the random fault codes.
