WW2 US tank engine. 1100ci (18 ltrs) 500 ponies, 32 valve, all alloy 60 degree V8. Dont know what I would do with it, but I want one.

When I read in post #4 that it’s 18 Litres was producing a very impressive 1400Nm from idle to 2600 rpm I was going to say the same thing until I remembered AMG were building 6 Litre V12’s for some of their cars that they electronically limited to 1000Nm @ 2000rpm and that sort of took a little bit of the shine off it.
Still it's impressive to have 1400 on tap at idle similar to an electric motor.

Ford GAF GAA GAN V8s were derived from Ford's stillborn V-12 aero engine.

I find it amazing that in the early 1940's Ford developed this amazing all alloy 32-valve DOHC 60-degree V8 engine for use in a plane but it ultimately went into the Sherman tank.
Yet in later years they developed lumps of iron single cam pushrod engines for their cars and only now a Mustang gets an all alloy DOHC 32V DOHC engine. Fords history could have been entirely different. |

And so many rice boys will claim the Japs invented DOHC and 4-valves per cylinder....
It was around in the 1930s! Just the economics of making them in production car volumes, at the required accuracy, destined for affordable cars, wasn't so crash hot. |

Actually saw one of these monsters in a shed here in Melbourne.
It's physically HUGE. All Alloy, DOHC, Gear driven, (No belts for cams or water pumps or fans to fail), flat plane crank. And it into production in 1940, so must have been developed in the late 30's, That's a cool 80 years ago. I'd drop one in a early F350 or something equally daft. Anyway, as you were.

I had a 29-litre Continental V12 diesel from a tank in my shed for a couple of years.
Bought it from the army surplus auction, and were thinking speed boat, but ended up selling it to Sweden instead. The one in this video is from Sweden, probably the same one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=towwFXo5k8Q It had 3 hours running time after factory overhaul, and had factory tags attached. It came with an Allison auto gearbox from the tank. Imagine I could have built a tractor pulling drag racer of it just by bolting on two back wheels. Would have been cool. Cheers, |

The flat plane crank allows for a more free-reving engine and usually a higher RPM limit, but is harsher because it lacks the counterweights of a cross-plane crank.
Most likely chosen for simplicity in this application.
