engine rebuild prices

Hi,

I recently aquired a lovely EB XR6 but unfortunately knocking appeared in the engine soon after. I did not hear this when testing the car

:
Was wondering what type of costs this might involve. The knocking sounds like it's from the rear of the engine and it's done 170000km. It's definately internal so I'm assuming the engine will need a rebuild or at least a 'half rebuild'.
Any info would be great so I can prepare my wallet.

that all depends on how your going to do it
are you going to rebuild it yourself or are you going to get a mechanic to do it for ya

Is it like a gurgling knocking sound? It could be the oil pump... Get everything checked before you rip it all apart

Yeah it is a bit. It's hard to tell if the noise speeds up with the engine. Would it lean towards the oil pump going if the knocking noise isn't as prominent when the engine is warm?

Man I really do hope it is the oil pump. I'll have to get to my mechanics this week and check it out.

My engine occasionally gets a ticking noise, is that bad?

The injectors can make a ticking sound but that is pretty normal. Low oil pressure could do that too I'm guessing.

The ticking may be lifters, i have a lifter that loves to tick as soon as the motor gets hot... i have a new one in my ash tray, but you know, i cant be stuffed putting it in

Well I took it to my regular mechanic and he thought it was nothing. Good chance it was oil slapping around in the sump and the trans was waaay overfilled (from previoius owner). He said he heard an EA once that was oilslapping so hard, he thought a bearing had gone but it was only that. He did a quick service on the trans. Only thing he mentioned was a leaking exhaust. So much relief on the wallet but I'm still not 100% confident as it sounds like something is 'loose'. Does anybody else have a bubbly loose random knocking sound at the back of their engine which is considered 'normal'?? Sometimes the sound is reasonably obvious. Other times you can hardly pick it.

3.9 EA's had a LOT of Crankshaft troubles. They were replaced a lot under warranty because of Excessive End float. Sounds unusual that you would have one of these as it was fixed with a NEW crankshaft. I doubt the motor would have lasted this long with an OLD style Crank.

Quickest way is go to an Engine Reconditioner and ask his advice? they are usually pretty good at picking noises that are harmless or?? :(

My EA has the noise you describe, has had it for years. My EB had it too, before the timing cas decided to explode. lol

Yeah I've got the 4.0 EB XR6 engine though. I would've hope they would've fixed it by then. I might get a second opinion just to be sure although my mechanic is usually pretty good.

Did you ever suss out what it was? And do you think the noise was related to your timing cas exploding?
