Default Rear Bumber and Boot -- How much?

Had a woman run up the back of my series 3 LPG sedan today (we were the only 2 cars for at least 2km around!) so I'll have to run round and get repair / replacement quotes on monday. Might turn out to be a cash jobbie not an insurance one...

Just wondering, what price range is reasonable for an exchange or new painted bumper? I just need this sorted with as little fuss as possible -- don't have time to sift through pricing crap.

The plastic absorbed the damage, so it's all scratched and has little fractures, but is there anything else I should check for in regards to damage? The bumper now sits a little lower than it did this morning, but is still attached.

And if they're going to be mixing the paint up anyway, I figure the boot needs a respray so how much should I offer them in cash to do that?

I'd get it to a panel beater before giving a price..
There could be damage behind the bar and possibly even structural damage..
Why wouldn't you go through insurance....?

Cos I might need the cash for other things...

Also she didn't speak english very well so I have to find out from her husband if she is insured at all. Try explaining 3rd party insurance to a non english speaker!

At least she admitted liability and I have her address/contact details and her kids are definitely there (meaning they live there).

Love that TL50 by the way

Cos you need the cash for other things hey....

Just cos she didn't speak english well, doesn't mean she's completely stupid..
It's amazing how many people think this..

I hope for her sake she has insurance...
could end up costing her a fortune.....

Cheers

Haha it's not the lack of english that makes her stupid, it's running up the **** of the only other car for miles around at 100km/h on the freeway that makes her stupid She said she wasn't looking

The cash would be for a new exhaust if I went down that path. I figure I can live with a cracked bumper if I can get a more efficient / better drive. I would honestly rather deal with the insurance though.

Anyway, has anyone resprayed their boot before? What did it set you back?

If a price indication is what you're after..
I got my bumpers rubbed back and painted for $500, that was front, rear and sideskirts...
But it can depend on your colour...

have you looked in your spare wheel well yet?

seen plenty of cars that have been rear ended that look almost unscathed but look in the boot and they have that horrible screwed up tinfoil look going on...

I don't have a wheel well. The straight LPG ones have a flat boot with two gas tanks underneath, and the spare tyre sits in the boot. They both look untouched, thank goodness. Just checked, the boot is still flat.

Just called them, the hubby will be home soon, so this should get all sorted out.

thats good then, i wonder if the mods for the tanks makes the back end a bit stronger?

one thing im curious about though, you said you were on a freeway, only 2 cars round for miles, and they were doing about 100... so were you stopped on the freeway?

I was doing about 60 when she hit. Dog was in the middle bush / weed bit. It's a champagne-ish coloured (forgot the code) car and all my brake lights etc work so it's not like I'm not visible.

It's still driveable, but not happy that they hurt my baby.

Finally got through to the husband, just let him have a look at the car to humour him. Not necessary but I'd rather be civil about the whole business. They apparently have insurance, but he wouldn't give me the details. He claims he will call me soon when they decide what to do.

Found out that if you have 3rd party property damage with RAC (like me) they'll cover up to $3K damage to your car if the party at fault doesn't have insurance and you can supply their full details.

So now I get to sit and wait until I get more info as to what's going on. Might do that police report after all, just in case.

Doing a police report would of been the first thing i would of done. If it costs more than 3k your going to the wrong place unless there is any hidden damge.
My AU rolled down a driveway across the road going over a gutter and hitting a brick pillar, was enough speed to do damage to the rear cross member under the plastic rio and put my tow bar out of wack, it also cracked the brick pillar.

i hope you don`t get stiffed Atomiclord , i had a bloke run into me while i was stationary many years ago, he also admitted liability , he said "he don`t know what happened i`ll give you a new bootlid" , this bloke hit me hard enough to crease the roof in a 67 xr falcon, i think i would have at least reported the accident to the police and got a written assessment by a beater, good luck anyway.

Well called my insurance today just in case (RACWA) and, as expected, they aren't going to chase her up. So basically if they won't lodge a claim to their insurance (for which they refuse to give me the details) then I'm in the poop, right?

File a police report, get a quote for the repairs from a reputable smash repair, then speak to a solicitor. I'd be taking legal action against them (most likely it will go to small claims).

Bah, I don't have the money for that. Back at uni again this month, going back to my engineering degree finally.

Oh well, I'll get it looked at and if the damage is only cosmetic, I'll just wait and hope. If there is real damage, I will have to save up and go small claims.

How long would be reasonable to wait for them to put the claim in to their insurer?

If they aren't going to be a beneficiary of the incident then who knows, if they were trying to get money off you they would have done it by now.

She sounds like a negligent driver and would have been charged with undue care and attention if police have been involved. Follow it through, F-her non english, they understand money, not being racist. I have seen more than one person from overseas scam us, look at cab drivers. Anyway good luck and get that exhaust done.
