Default O-rings in brake cylinder (1981 mk 2 2L)

I'm having an absolute bugger of a time trying to get the o-rings into the brake cylinders without dislodging them when I drop the piston in.
The o-rings supplied are 46mm, but the old ones are 54mm, which is the piston diameter. Is there a way of stretching these? All the other seals in the kits seem to fit just fine.
Any ideas about how to get these to fit?
