As far as im aware the highest tow load Ford supplied was 2,300kg's being the 'heavy duty tow pack' as they call it. Auto AU's generally are a little slugglish off the line, the best way to give her some more boogy would be to change the diff gears.

3.7's or 3.9's maybe, 4.11's are a little too extreme for some unless you're a regular at the drags. It will effect the rpm the car criuses at too

Your standard diff gears would be 3.45. They didnt change the gears if you got a tow pack fitted.

Converting to manual would be my pick then start doing mods to make more power.
If you want to keep the auto put shorter diff gears in and go from there. 3.9's would still be ok on the highway and give a bit more punch off the line. |

sounds like other things are at play rather then diff gears etc.. how's the engine, exhaust etc..? when was the last time the auto was serviced?

I am surpirsed you are having trouble towing, my EF XR6 was a fantastic tow car and would happily tow my near 2 ton boat up and down mountain passes. I would look at a cam before diff gears, unless you tow all the time and not on the highway.

The way I understood his post was that he just assumed he'd have taller diff gears because its got a tow pack, not about a lack of power when towing.
Maybe he can confirm? If he isnt towing much I'd go manual. If he is then I'd stay auto too. I was always worried about smashing 3rd gear when towing with my 5 speed. Boost will fix it. |

When i bought my XR8, i told Ford that i towed a boat and they steering me away from the turbos, which i was seriously considering, said they got too hot when towing, hence why i got the xr8

i had a manual au3 xr6 ute which was quick as for a 6 N/A, much fun to drive, but load it up with the trailer and a VW beetle would probably beat it, i thought the manual au could only tow 1000kg's, hence the reason i sold it and bought an auto XR8 which i plan to put a locker and 3.9's in, with tranny cooler to.
