Default Manual Gearbox Problems

Hey peeps,

I've been having a few issues with transmission in my ute over the last few weeks and was wondering whether anyone could shed any light on the matter.

Basically what's hapening is when it's cold, the 4 to 5 shift produces and bit of a crunch. After it's warmed up it was fine. I rang a few GB places and they recommended dropping the oil and topping it up with some synthetic stuff.

Sounds easy enough, and was, but now it doesn't grind when it's cold, just when it warmed up. Shifting up through to 4th is really good and once it's in 5th there is no whining or anything else un-toward.

Does anyone have any ideas and recommedations? I figure it's probably a synchro... Is it cheaper to have the box pulled apart and repaired, or am I better off going for an exchange unit?

Dave

what oil did you end up putting in?

theres a brand called redline, who do 'shockproof' which is the bees knees, and can often rid slight shift issues.

The Mainlube 154 Synthetic Solid Boundary E P gear Oil SAE 75w80 will assist your syncros to work better because of the Group 4 base oil and being still quite a light Oil.

Info in the Mainlube sponsors area.

Cheers

Steve

I was recommended to use Castrol Transmax Z, with the Penrite 7906 additive.

Do you really think the problem could be solved by a simple lubricant, or is it symptoms of a bigger problem - and more expensive...

Mate this would be my concern too- I am sort of wondering if you are only going to end up masking it so to speak by using a different oil?

+1. If it's just the one gear change that does it then it's prob gonna need a new 5th synchro. Best to get a quote to strip your box and replace the worn synchro and bearings (necessary when you pull apart the box) and compare prices with a changeover box. When I pulled my box apart (for a whining noise in 1,2,3 and 5th) hoping that it would be bearings and i found the gears were shot (pitted to buggery). I got a changeover from Status engineering who where cheaper for a changeover than I could fix my box for just in parts alone.

Hope this helps

Wes

Oil is by far the cheapest way of checking, even with Mainlube.

It won't make it any worse.

If you mask the problem and loose the symptoms then you have fixed the problem as the problem is only there while the symptom is there.

Cheers

i agree with steve.. i know of people with t5 boxes whove had crunching syncros, and then switched to a quality lubricrant and ran the box for ages (including drifting winton).

Thank you for all the advice so far. Very much appreciated.

As it stands, I am investigating a reco box, but am willing to give the Mainlube advice/treatment more attention.

Steve: I would appreciate a little more information on the Mainlube products.

I will endeavour to post up as much information as possible in order to help other forum users.

Dave
