Default Tsunami for SE QLD & Northern NSW!

Quote:
Australia is on tsunami watch after a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Chile's coast, toppling buildings and killing at least six people.

"An undersea earthquake has occurred near the coast of Central Chile," the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said in a statement, warning of a potential tsunami threat to Queensland, NSW, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island.

"Tsunami waves have been observed on the coast of chile that may threaten Australia."

The Bureau of Meteorology's Tsunami Warning Cenre advised just before 9pm that threatened areas extended from Point Danger to Double Island Point and Moreton Bay.

There was a possibility of dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding for several hours from 8:15 am (AEST) tomorrow.

The quake, capable of tremendous damage, hit off Chile's coast at 3:34am local time (1734 AEDT) on Saturday, shaking buildings in the capital, where some have buildings collapsed.

The epicentre of the tremor was 100 kilometres north northwest of the Chilean town of Chillan and 115 kilometres northeast of Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live along the Bio Bio river.

Could be a really busy day for me at work tomorrow, for the sake of the population of SE QLD I hope not.

It's the Earth's way of controlling the population. It can only sustain so many before it starts throwing a tantrum (or tsunami) every now and then.

Pretty tough if you are in an area selected for population reduction!

It'll fizzle out before it gets here... the tide'll probably come in, go out and go back to where it was. And all those people who ignored the warnings, going down to the coast to watch it, will probably still be there at sunset waiting, waiting.... waiting

Tsunami hitting Chatham Islands east of NZ, started at 0.5m now up to 1.5m.

In Gisborne, NZ the sea was seen to recede, evacuations happening.

Lol, we are only a couple of streets away from the coast at the moment. Yet I cant be bothered going to sticky beak. =)

You can look at Bom.gov.au for more information. I do know up here this morning the local dogs are all acting weird!

im not a scientist, but the doubting thomas in me says nothing will happen.

After the boxing day tsunami, they probably have to treat even the slightest threat with extreme caution so they can justify the warning system

Really only going to affect currents here rather than anything spectacular like large waves or large sea level rises.

look . on the scale of things it's nice to know that we can have a massive earth quake on the coast without mega tsunamis . however i fear for chille 8.8 is massive in earthquke terms.

the hardcore meteorologist earthquake guy on the news said 800 times more powerful? And the most powerful ever recorded is 9.5 so its not far off. The boxing day one was 9.2 I think

I'd say the difference between 8.8 and 9.5 is massive since the number difference between haiti and chille wasn't alot, but it was infact 800 times more powerful, if that makes sense?

im no expert (correct me if im wrong) i think the richter scale works by every 0.1 it gos up the force of the quake is double so 9.5 would indeed be massive

plucked this from wikipedia

The energy release of an earthquake, which closely correlates to its destructive power, scales with the 3⁄2 power of the shaking amplitude. Thus, a difference in magnitude of 1.0 is equivalent to a factor of 31.6 ( = (10^1.0)(3 / 2)) in the energy released; a difference in magnitude of 2.0 is equivalent to a factor of 1000 ( = (10^2.0)(3 / 2) ) in the energy released
