Default Hard starts

Hi folks, first time in the AU section.

I have an AUII which first thing of a morning is causing me some worry.
Sometimes it wont start first go, or worse it runs on 3 or 4 cyclinders for a few seconds and stops, it also sounds like its hydraulicing (Spelling yes i know).

Once you start it the 2nd time round its fine.
It does smell a bit of fuel from the exhaust afterwards.

Any ideas?

usual suspects

battery isn't 100%

Faulty O2 sensor

Blocked or dirty fuel filter

Last point of call a Fuel pressure regulator issue

It wont start, as in it turns over and nothing happens or it runs rough for a few seconds and dies.
On the 2nd turn of the key the car starts fine.

The rest of the day its fine and will sit for several hours and start right away. Its only when the sits overnight.

Its not a slow starter issue or a battery issue.

Could be leaking injectors, but I'd replace the cheap/easy things first like fuel filter and see how you go.

Had a similar problem in my AU xr8, would crank and crank and crank, nothing. Then would start and run rough. Start again and all would be fine for a while. Then play upo again.
Turned out to be the Fuel Pump Regulator not talking to the fuel pump.
One of Fords more inexpensive parts only $23.
Replaced the Regulator and all is now fine.

Yeah the petrol side of mine is a ***** to start. My symptoms are almost the same as yours. If i cared about petrol i might do something about it. But i don't because 51cpl is much better.

My AU Fairmont Ghia starts fine cold, however after a short drive of less then 2K's and shut down for a little while it sometimes makes a hell of a fuss trying to light up. It will crank and crank with a few cylinders firing while the engine tries to shake itself to destruction and then shuts down. Makes for quite a spectacle for bemused passers by. The exact same occurred with my EL and Ford dealers have never replicated the problem with either car. I have found that depressing the go pedal while cranking seems to clear the problem ..............or am I dreaming.
