Talking Hybrid Mustang, F-150 and Transit by 2020

http://performancedrive.com.au/ford-...onfirmed-0410/

This will be interesting- the Mustang already took a leap when it adopted four-cylinder power, and odds-on it will downsize and become Atkinson cycle for the hybrid application. I'm guessing a lightweight battery pack will be implemented. Or maybe it will be a 48V mild-hybrid for the V8? The more powerful the motor, the less work the engine has to do...

F-150 is more interesting, especially if it adopts a four-cylinder engine to supplement its electric motor. Will it get market acceptance in Murica?

Looking forward to the Transit hybrid and autonomous ride-sharing car but dunno if they'll come here. Imagine if they called it Falcon... ( ah scratch that don't want a ban )

F150 is interesting on a number of levels. Getting a hybrid model to sell well will make a large contribution to their company wide emissions, but there's a practical application too. The instant electrical torque will give diesel like performance alot better than other solutions.

I am worried it's another sign Ford don't have a V8 future though.

Its not just here, few months back in Hawaii went to the Ford dealers in Honolulu don't talk ecoboost Mustang ($29k) they laugh at you, went like this the a 4cyl doesn't belong in a Mustang and you only get a V6 for rental car company's.
Its the heritage behind the car and in a Country where petrol is 65 cents a litre they love there big old muscle V8's, this is something that will only change with generations, many parts of the US will never embrace it.

The Hybrid will need to have some serious punch or it will be off to the rental car companies also..

Word is the 5.0 will be replaced by a 4.8 V8 with both direct and port injection. If it's true, I wouldn't be surprised to see an EcoBoost version. But I'm more interested to see what the hybrid can do.

Do you think there's a desire from F series buyers for a large non turbo, non hybrid petrol engine that would just be expected to kick over hundreds of thousands of miles on basic maintenance? Or do you think they'll get on board with higher tech engines if the performance justifies it? Afterall what Ford puts into F series really dictates their large engine and drivetrain options.

There are probably many who say that now, but the past indicates when new technologies beat older ones in performance and fuel economy, most people make the switch. The EcoBoosts sell very well, though there are still fans of the 5.0, so Ford hasn't got rid of it. I think it's great we have options!

I accept it, just wouldn't want one.
I'd rather a V8 in a Mustang even if it was slower than the ecoboost. It's not though.

Coyote was designed for EcoBoost, the ports are there for DI, still unused.

Not sure why they are reducing the displacement. Maybe with turbocharging, there isn't as much of a need for a longer stroke and it will improve drivability. Just a guess.

3.5 V6 Ecoboost is already replacing 6.2 V8 applications, so I think any potential Coyote based EcoBoost has to have that kept in mind. If it was going to drop down alot closer to 4L it could eventually replace the 3.5, given the 2.7l and 3l engines now sitting under it performing similar to the first gen 3.5 EcoBoost.

Interesting, is there much involved in converting a Miami/Coyote to DI and what would the power/efficiency gains be .

For ford to do it won't be that hard. To convert an already built engine to DI isnt really possible, it would need a DI version to swap parts from. Bowled pistons required, whole new fuel system due to the huge fuel pressure required, plus whatever else. Some DI engines have to run the fuel pump off the camshaft or crank.

Mustang's already been announced.
I reckon a proper Focus electric (not just the compliance one they have now) or C-segment EV, Lincoln might want to get on the bandwagon if they want to compete with BMW, Audi, Merc, Jag, etc.

A Super Duty Hybrid would be very cool

I'm curious if all the RWD products will get the same basic hybrid package, or if they will have something smaller for potentially Mustang/Transit/Ranger? And then a larger one for F series/SUV's.
