Question 6 years from the GFC - how have values of collectable cars been affected?

There was a million dollars paid for GT-HO Phase III several years ago. Would such a car get the same, less, or more these days? This is a one off example. What about the general state of collectable car prices these days?

Car isnt an investment, its there to be enjoyed and driven.

Made $5K on my GMC Sierra, I'd gladly throw that $5K down the drain to have the chance to enjoy it some more.

Pro tip: IF you've got something you really like, don't think the grass is greener and sell it for 'something better'.

Prices have fallen a lot, I was of the opinion the very huge prices were very suspect, probably a money laundering system.

Let see, +$300,000 for a good but old GT V's $80,000 for a new GT

Only insiders or those close to the transactions will know how much money actually changed hands. The advertised price is often a bit of mis-information. Sellers of such cars generally advertise a high price to scare off the wood ducks and just attract serious buyers or just to test the market.

Buyers go in for the low ball and work up from there. Somewhere in between the two shall meet.

High end and desirable cars still attract a premium price but buyers are now a lot more discerning which means average cars have been affected.

This could have a major effect in years to come. When my generation become too old/sick/dropped off the perch/couldn't be fagged anymore and decide to move our muscle cars on there won't be anywhere near the same interest from the next generation of buyers. Give it 5 to 10 years and there will be a glut of these cars on the market.

What were todays 30 something year olds lusting after when they were in their teens??

Skylines, WRXs, Evos etc is what was the hero cars when I was young and I am now 28. I like classic metal just as I like jap import etc, but I could give 2 stuffs about Ford's 1, 2 finish back in the hay day. These cars mean little to most of my friends other than a car to admire but nevr bother to own.

IMO in the years to come the price will only get cheaper.

In 20 years, the market will be flooded with these muscle cars. As the older generation start to die off, stop driving etc. more and more of these cars will come onto the market.

There is still some young guys that want this type of car but it is a small majority. In 50 years’ time, most of these cars will need restoring again anyway.

The market is still dead and I don't think the prices will ever raise to where they were, as people will be gun shy for one and to, the demand wont be there for these cars soon to ask those once crazy prices... I think people are still over pricing old school cars thou.

I think moving forward... older model WRXs, EVOs will rise in price, especially if not modified, also down the track (10-20yrs at least) a un-modified XR6 Turbo or F6310, will be something that is chased after and might get a decent amount of money for.

but again, who knows where the car world goes and what people want in the future.

I get the same, every time i drive the XC to school with the P plates up and all i see is heads turning. Even get teachers who one would never assume to have any interest in cars complimenting me. Nothing better than driving a classic everyday. Love it.

I always thought that too. It will be a few years before we see the $1m PHIII again (and wouldn't you buy a Shelby or AC Cobra for that money anyway?).

Yup, drug dealers cleaning their cash and those who sold came along for the ride. A bloke I work with was offered 220k for a two door Monaro he is kicking himself now. Younger folk now dont give a toss. Back in the 70s and 80s being into cars and racing was like having a footy team. Now the green brigade dont really dig it.

True.
The high prices of these Muscle Cars had forced a lot of enthusiasts like us out of the market.

The absurdly high prices for HO's were created by a cunning and illegal scheme by a few crooked people. It was unsustainable and so prices have eased back to good realistic figures.

Wasn't bad for Australians but ask some Americans about what happened to them during the GFC.

Younger families have 500,000 + mortgages these days ..
Back then home loans where way way less than that ..
Another .. It depends on the next hot models coming into Aust ..
So much to spend on these days and SO many options ..

I thought you were talking about model collectable cars!! The bum fell out of them during the GFC and never recovered. Although the 1:18 Bianti White XY HO with twin mirrors still seems to hold its price (one for sale at the moment on Fleebay $2,600 bought for $150, 15 years ago)

When I joined this forum in 06 any word spoken against the supposed value of mighty P3 HO was met with post after post of heckles from the enlightened.

Where are all the faithful now.

It was never going to be sustainable, and the tipping point was when that clown got on the evening news and announced his million dollar HO for sale.
It all went backwards from then because the penny dropped.
The ONLY Australian built Ford worthy of that sort of money is a Calypso green XA with HO on the tag.

One of the aforementioned enlightened also proclaimed house prices would never go backwards either.

Lucky we did away with rep points a few years ago and he split or he'd be looking very suspect now...lol

the reason for those very high prices for the Phase III's was that a couple of speculators drove up the prices by selling to each other, then when the price was high they put them on the open market, there was an expose about them and what they did
