Default Holden putting off 500 workers in Melb.

Holden are putting 500 workers off at it's Fishermans Bend plant in Melbourne at the end of next year.

Looks like declining sales are hitting hard at Holden.
Feel sorry for the 500 workers

They announced retrenching 1400 workers in 2005, retrenching workers in 2006, 2007 and of course 2008.

They've been retrenching since the Holden and Frost merger and it won't be the last.

lets see what the media makes of this, as when Ford chose to shut the Geleong engine
plant it was all "the sky is falling" doom and gloom

Probably the G8 manufacturing business being shifted to the US?

Default Holden cut 500 jobs and 4cyl engine

Interesting times when Holden are no longer going to make a 4cyl engine.

Does anyone know what car these went into?

The Family II Engine. It should have been killed off in the 80's, however according to Wikipedia, the Family II Engine was used in:

Chevrolet Optra
Chevrolet Evanda
Suzuki Reno
Suzuki Forenza

Other models
1.6 L - Daewoo Kalos, Daewoo Gentra, Chevrolet Aveo
1.8 L - Chevrolet Lacetti, Chevrolet Nubira, Chevrolet Rezzo
C24SE, *2.4 L SOHC - Isuzu Rodeo
2.4 L DOHC - Chevrolet Captiva, Opel Antara

Are they still going to be making the Alloytec engine?

What you are saying is Holden's Korean range of sleeper performance vehicles that replaced the Euro trash.

Reading the article i is only the 4cyl plant. My guess becaus it closes at the end of 2009 it is the same reason Ford is not going to make the inline 6. New emmission regs.

Is the new emissions regs the reason why ford are not making the straight 6 anymore???

Very sad. Not only because of how reliable these moters are but because no other manufacturer uses them. They are all V6's.

Catch 22. people buy cheap so they can buy more. Cheap comes from China.

everyone needs to manufacture in china to compete because people buy cheap thus consumers lose their jobs so they HAVE to buy cheap to live.

Nobody wants to be the one that spends a little more.

And Perth is a lame tourist destination so we'd be doubly f*ked in that situation. Seriously we have some buildings, and some suburbs. And if you dont mind a lot of travel... a curvy rock.

This has been on the cards for years, Holden and its employees were all aware it was just a matter of when. The Family II engine is as old as the hills and was only ever going to stay into production until it was replaced by more high tech engines. Once no one needed it anymore it was just a case of shut up shop.

They don't make the ZF auto, it comes direct from ZF in Germany. Its the 4 speed that they make.

Well, haven't been called Ion for 3-4 years. They are called Drivetrain System Internationale.

The gearbox is made in 4,5,6 & 7 speed. The 4,5 & 6 all fit in the 4 spd case!

There was a massive media uproar when Ford announced the closure in 2-3years time of the engine plant & redeployment to the Focus program.

This Holden loss of 500 jobs, with almost no redeployment. Media blip. Nothing. Previous job losses resulting in thousands. Nothing. Media's favourite.
