Question Consul to Cortina conversion?

Thinking about buying a Cortina mk1, well what I have on offer is actually a consul Cortina 62-63. I love the non airflow outside but I hate the dash and controls.

Is it possible to convert the dash from Console to Cortina? Round 67 gauges instead of the bar Consul speedo.

This is my first Cortina mk1, im usually a Escort guru but know little about early Cortina's. I plan to restore and convert to pinto/zetec/duratec etc as a sleeper.

Advice much appreciated.

You could go for the 64 consul which had round gauges

Hi. A late model steering column can give you wipers/washers, park/head lights, turn sigs, headlight dip/high/flash and ignition switch, how many more controls do you need? Hot rodders have been changing gauges for years, there are matching speedo, tacho and quad (fuel/oil/temp/volts) gauge packs almost everywhere. Cheers MD

Hi. The OP said he hated the dash AND controls, I think I covered both seeing the column would need to be changed to a collapsible unit to pass engineering inspection. By picking the right column you would only need hazard light switch (if wanted) heater controls (needed but left out of many modified cars, may argue not required in pre 70's car) and brightness control for dash gauges (hide in bottom edge of dash). Cheers MD

The early controls are cool but the strip speedo not so great. Look for a ore-airflow Mk 1 Cortina GT (Lotus the same) pod (repops avail in UK). Replaces strip speedo and allows use of round gauges without metalwork.

That is an airflow (post-'64) car. GTs had extra cluster where ashtray is.

The pre-'65s had a strip speedo except for GT and Lotus which had a binnacle that fixed to dash in place of speedo with a round gauge-containing cluster.

not all pre airflow cars had strip speedo's the 64 consul Cortina had round gauges and it did not have to be a gt or lotus to have this the gt had three large gauges 1st had fuel, oil pressure &temp in it 2nd was a tacho 3rd speedo standard car had 2 gauges 1st speedo 2nd fuel & temp and the early gt [strip speedo] had the tacho on the steering column which was a column change steering column surround with tacho placed in the hole where the gear change would of come out of

I have a 64 GT gauge pod which according to others will fit over the strip speedo. Also centre consul ,chrome side strips for a 2 door GT ,grill and lots of other stuff in the garage which may be useful. PM me if your interested.

Bar speedo's cortina's are rare. Leave it as it is.
If you can find one but there very rare too (there was one on eBay for $350), get the tacho from a GT that they added on to the steering columns on the 63 GT's.
