Just wanna get some ideas, I'll be looking at a new motor soon as mines coming up to 300k. What's the average price for a reco 4lt motor these days? I CBF ringing round :P
Or do you guys think i'd be better off going for a S/H tickford motor or something? I asked at Dandenong rebores how much for a reco bottom end....$900. For a race series build it's a bit less than $2k. That's fully balanced etc etc. |

Doug, send john_xr6 a PM.
His dad is a engine reconditioner by trade and does good work.

How much work do you want to do youself? Parts and machining for a "race rebuild" is about $1300 if you dont mind bolting it all together.

$900 will well and truly get you a low kay AU motor, and ~$700 is that starting price for a EF/EL XR motor in the Trading Post. Best off getting a wreck and getting all the other gear with it.

I'd prefer to do all the work myself. That's why I asked dandy rebores just for a reco bottom end. Then I could just get a DEV head and bolt that on with cam etc etc. Was still more expensive than what I thought. If it's gonna be that much I'd rather do what Sunny said and get a AU wreck. I've decided to try and chase the type of times Hus was running with his EB. So NOS will be on the cards eventually (I can hear Dan going 'yay' :1syellow1 already) so I'll need a bottom end that can handle it ok. So far Hus's has held up fine with just AU pistons and an EB block. |

NOS?? Yay!!!
There was an AU XR6 and T5 with pedal box and ECU at Just falcons, the guy who bought it was having second thoughts and they were going to give it me for $1800 2 weeks ago. When I had my EB I was quoted $900 ( i think, it was ages ago ) for a normal AU engine with all the accessories to convert to a single belt.

the first engine i built was the 351c found in my cortina now, its not as hard as you think. If you feel confident at doing head gasket, diff build etc, you may aswell do it and save some money. Then also you know EXACTLY whats inside your engine.

A 75-100 hp shot would be fine for a stock motor if it was setup right.
Im planning to put a 30-50hp shot on a 3 cylinder turbo DOHC EFI engine once I fit it into the mini.

what do you mean by setup right... would you need an aftermarket computer.. or can you safely do a dodgy cheap setup.. i.e. less than $1000 ?

Doug's probably going to get ****ed when he gets back to his post, so I'll try and answer his question-
The ACL race series kit is about $700 and you would probably spend $500 on machining. Put some more money aside for new rod/head bolts and other bits and pieces (filters, etc). Put it together yourself- bottom ends are pretty easy to assemble you just have to make sure everything is really clean, do a dummy assemble and triple check all of the clearances. Weigh that up with a low km AU motor and you have a tough choice. Depends what you plan on doing with it. Dan and I have already decided that you are turbo and Nitrousing it, so I'd build a fresh bottom end. - John |

Then you have to deal with all the other problems you get when you have more power than stock.
