Well after the best part of 5 hours of toil I managed to remove and install a new carpet for one of my AU's..
Getting it out is a mission as they seem to have put some brackets to hold the dash over the top of the carpet. You have to cut the carpet around those. The gear selector mechanism has 4*13mm nuts fastened to the underside of the car above the transmission.. Even with the use of a hoist I couldn't see any way of getting to them without dropping the tranny.. So the carpet had to be cut around that too :( You then have to cut the new carpet in similar places to get it to refit back into the car.. All I can say if you don't have good quality floor mats, get some asap because in comparison to the E'Series updating or removing your carpet for cleaning is a royal pain in the a$$.

Everyone assumes this will be an easy job but yes its as fiddly as hell.
I used to always put new carpets in my S/H cars I used to sell beacuse it worked a treat on punters with the new car smell! But it wasn't the doddle u think to fit them at all. you actually had to rip them off a bit to cover your time although carpets are actually very cheap we used to get these great moulded deep cut pile ones very cheaply. |
