I replaced the globes in the front door handles of my HC GLX Mondeo (Mk II) on the weekend. Used little 1.2W 5mm wedge base units. The old, blown ones were a green-ish colour, of course the new ones are plain white. This doesn't look right. How do I colour the bulbs? Nail polish, cellophane, something else?
I've not seen green globes for sale, only amber in a few sizes for turn signals. |

one of my old cars, the prev owner painted (spray?) the foggies globes blue |

I had thought about dipping them in green paint or spraying them, but wondered about it handling the temperature. The globes are on whenever the lights are on. No doubt they wouldn't get anywhere near as hot as a foglight globe though.

Green LEDs would be your best bet, Ebay should be a good source. They also give a cleaner lights and no heat.

Yes, I'd thought about using LEDs instead of globes. Perhaps next time they're due for replacement. I think I'll give the paint a try in the meantime.

Just an update, after fiddling with painting a test globe I got a bit frustrated.
Instead I used four layers of green cellophane gift wrapping taped onto the door handle moulding. Access to the globe requires the whole door lining to be removed, whereas the moulding around the door handle is a single screw and clip in fit. There is a plastic diffuser between the globe and the frosted window moulded into the door handle surround moulding so heat from the globe should not affect the cellophane. The colour and brightness seem just perfect, a bit dimmer than the original setup which seemed too bright to me. Less layers of cellophane (two layers) gave good colour and similar brightness to the original setup. |
