Default Need collective help guys/gals!

Hey guys.

Well unless I get a call tonight, my preffered new ride is not happening. So, I need some advice. What do you guys think I should do out of the following?

Just for some background, I am at uni for another 2-3 years, and have been renting with friends for the last 2 or so. I work casual/part time during uni then go full time during holidays.

Option 1
Id love an old 60's falcon (XL,XK,XM), but for a daily I am not too sure. There is a sweet XL for $4500 at the moment that would be great, but yeah, dont know if I could handle old school everyday. Basically the plan would be to keep it original and straight, then finish uni and garage it once I got a career.

Option 2
Or should I use my brain and go for some non ford 4 cylinder. Ive been tempted to start researching Pular SSS N14's, apparently they are not to bad. Or even early 90's Golf Gti's. Or perhaps a 92/93 ford telstar ghia (v6), they seem good aswell, but that would be a private sale as some dealer seem to think a tx5 is worth 9k...lol

Option 3
Or, I do what I would prefer to do and stick to e-series. For value for money you cannot go wrong. I would prefer a V8. But if its a really good 6 then i wont be to hesitant as I love the I6. I dont want to go EA unless its a really nice SVO or Brock.

I should also state that my spending limit is $7500. And the car must (could possibley be swayed) be a manual, sunoof is a big plus, and so is black.

I could go an auto depending on condition I guess, but it would have to be a ghia.

Also if its at a dealer I would be a little happier as I could trade in my car if it doesn't sell soon. And they also seem to be happy to accept cash as a way of lowering the price.

I have found another EB XR8 that I will check out friday, unfortunately that is my only day off at the moment.

Oh and if its less than 7500 thats a good thing to as it means I can mod straight away :sm_headba

So what would you guys do?

Oh and I was cut today because I just missed out on a Ef Gli, manual, stock as a rock with 148000 on it for $6999.

And what is with all the 5 speed EF's being in QLD and NSW...not impressed.

Stay e-series. As micsta said, old school is just too expensive! Anything less than 6 cylinders is just out of the question, and an e-series v8 dumpt, big rims, loud are just tough are reasonably afforable, to a certain extent.

I voted for 2, go for a cheap four potter, but I'd combine that with number 1

Yeah once I posted I thought that I should have put it in the pub...lol

If a mod wants to move it thats cool.

Racecraft - I did look at a m2 RS2000, but they are either really pricey, or cheapish and need alot of TLC.

iv only seen a couple really nice looking 4 bangers (being escorts mainly) and they have had big dollars spent on them. Falcons look great lowered with rims. Depending on personal preference.

fairlanes are nice, but Im not quite there yet.

It would have to be something pretty sensational for me to get it, I love Fairlanes but not enough to own one just yet. (FBT being the only exception, but that blows my budget a bit..lol)

A four cyl is prob the most practical solution but often you will get a lot more stuff for your money with another large car, cruise electric and so on (eg ef ghia) but different car can be loved for different reasons a older model integra is great fun for corners. Mind you if going to uni upgrading might be very hard for a few years so think what you could live with that long

A 6cyl TX5 Ghia isn't going to save you much on fuel. It'll just cost you more in parts and maintenance if it hasn't been looked after 100%.

I hate to say it but with 3yrs still to go at Uni, buy the 4cyl. Save your pennies, finish Uni, buy a house. Then, with your recently gained degree, get a job which with a car allowance, buy an FPV & let your boss pay for the whole experience!

Strange, I was going to say buy my lexus V8 powered dual cab Hilux for $7700.

If you are a poor uni student, probably go the 4 cyl. you will resent a thirsty car. Or get LPG.

I wouldn't say that I am poor....certinaly have enough to pay for bills and beer...I can handle my 6 now, so the 8 cant be that much worse

I also intend on buying a pushy as I need the exercise and uni is only 10 mins away.

There's a manual EF Futura with RWC for $6500 down my way (I saw the ad at uni, Monash Churchill). I'll grab the details on Thursday when I'm next in & post 'em up if you like?

Cheers

If you want something cheap to run with a bit of personality, a TX3 has good parts availability as well as a bit of desirability.

I was researching E series recently as my EA is snafu and the Laser is almost due for an upgrade. There was an ED Ghia 5L with low kms for 6-something selling privately. But you can't win really, the V8 is the only one with a reasonably bombproof engine, but it is less popular with LPG - and blowing a lot of dollars out the exhaust without it. At least there's a lot to choose from.

I have decided that the best car for the money is a '94-ish Vienta Ultima. But then I've reached an age where I couldn't care less about 'full sik' factor or trying to impress others.

Yeah that would be great, thanks Dave, but if the k's are high then I am not that interested.

I plan to have a look at a EB XR8, that has 140,000k's. hopefully it checks out ok.

Any Holden comments will be duely ignored :

I'm not really sure why people make these threads.

Only you know what you want and no matter what anybody else says, you'll always sway back to what it is that you want.

Go with what you want, not what everyone tells you to do...

^^tis true

My problem is that I would like one form each option...lol..but thats not happening.

I just thought there might be someone people that have experienced having older cars for a daily, or other e series people that have either gone 4 cylinder or stayed with e series.
