Is it Cheaper to Register a New car in NSW or ACT?

(And please don't start with the "oh you can't...". It's just a simple question.)

From what I recall ACT was cheaper, plus you don't need to have inspections every year.

I couldn't imagine that there would be a more expensive place to register a car than NSW.

Maybe, but the ACT transport website takes a prize for convoluted answers to costs. Perhaps it’s cheapest to register the front of the car in Canberra and the back in NSW? Wait... Oh, you can’t. :P

There's one ACT member I know of that keeps one of his cars on Vic rego as the ACT is way over the top it seems.

Can't answer that, but, if you were specific about what car, I'm sure that forum members with that specific car type, in NSW or ACT, could answer with personal experience.
For example.... V8 VY Holden rego (country) $ 532, CTP (country) $ $295, roadworthy inspection $34.

Hard to calculate accurately due to the varied cost of NSW CTP's (depending on your address) ie can vary suburb to suburb.

12 months rego in the ACT for a privately owned Ford Falcon FG XR6T costs between $1156 and $1190 depending on who you choose for compulsory 3rd party insurance. It's cheaper for lighter cars, I understand, where mine weighs ~1850kgs.

There's a $11.70 discount when you pick 12 months instead of 3 or 6 months.

Included in the total, there's a:
$27.50 fee for road rescue.
$2.50 contribution for road safety
$37.00 levy for lifetime care and support

Why I pay $37 a year when it's meant to be lifetime support - I don't know.

My mate had Vic rego for his weekend cars, but has changed to ACT because you can register for 3 months let it lapse for 9 months (-1 day?) and then register again without getting a road worthy done. Vic it seems will sting you somehow by backdating the renewal.

NSW - I'll leave that to the hoards to respond, as I don't know, but I know some respondents live there.

I guess when you refer to 'registration' you are talking about the actual cost that is based on car weight.

Seems Victoria has the lowest rego costs - just had a hire car for several days and it has Victorian rego - much the same as the rest of the vehicles in the hire place.

I don't know. However I'm pretty sure ACT do refunds on unused rego where NSW don't. For example if you sell a car. But it was years ago when I think I read that.

The $572.90 specified on that page for 12 months rego in my weight bracket doesn't include all the other things I listed - which comes to $639.90 total.. (Add an extra ~$517 for the CTPI if you pick the cheapest option.)

vs $466 for NSW (but what unknowns are added there - I can't say).

If you sell a car the rego moves to the new owner.

Having said that several years ago I bought an undrivable but registered car in NSW and once I handed in the plates I got the refund on the remaining portion of the rego.

I just paid the rego on my i30 wagon.

Credit card says $373.64

Looks like I should fall into the "1155 to 1504kg @ $305" but alas there is an extra 'Registration fee' of $67 and the rest is the credit card surcharge.

I really hate how they separate things like that...

Now my trailer rego makes sense...

According to NSW anything under 254kg is 'free'.

But I have always paid $67... so I'm just paying the fee to get my free registration.

N.S.W. Do refund the unused portion of you rego minus a couple of "fees" of course..You can also get a refund on the unused portion of your CTP..

AFAIK in NSW, you can let your rego lapse - you have 3 months max to reregister with std pink slip insp(after that it is blueslip), has to be for 12 mths, and is backdated to the lapse date. Years ago, you had to trailer your car for insp - nowadays, you are allowed to drive to the nearest insp station.
Bit of a grey area maybe - if you run up the a*rse of a merc, or run someone over on that trip, I'm thinking your greenslip and insurances are still void as the car is unrego'ed.

A very grey area. I used to have a 'classic' that I used to let run out of NSW rego, put the plates in RMS storage, do some work on it, and then re-register about a year later, (blue slip required).
Then get a permit to drive to inspection place and home again, no CTP or comprehensive, very carefully and slowly with fingers crossed that nothing would upset my day.

NSW is were a 1000kg Suzuki Vitara cost more to register than a 1500+kg Falcon
the vitara was $317 + $880 ($1197)
the falcon is $375 + $348 ($722)
