Default WS 1.6 Petrol Fiesta - engine suddenly noisy

Hi guys

I have 1.6L petrol WS Fiesta that sounds like a diesel when you first start it. Very tappity but goes away after it wams up. I have searched youtube and it seems to happen with other Fiesta's too. Is this a common fault? I've done 60K is it a hydraulic lifter problem? It's serviced regularly and I run good oil so very supprised if the lifters have gone already. Went to Ford but they want 120ph to diag fault. They won't admit there is a known issue with engine or even the well known issue with the manual gearbox and trying to select reverse.

Al help is appreciated

Regards

Kev

Mine does the same thing with the reverse and has done since it was new, hold foot on clutch before turning key, then by the time car is started it should be good to chuck it into reverse without it crunching in.

Also my Fiesta was very liftery until I changed oils to a different type, was using Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30, then changed to Penrite Enviro 5W-30 and it quietened up.

KEV!!

Our Fiesta Metal is doing this too! All of what you have mentioned - ours has only done 34000k.

Have had it to Ford and they 'can't hear it'.

I also have the reverse problem - it actually says in the manual to count to three when slotting it in. My wife and I have just got used to this and take our time with it and it is fine.

Ours would also ping like anything when it was run on 91 or 95 - we run exclusively 98 now and its great.

The tappety 'diesel' noise is the only thing I am worried about - will be interested to hear what others say.

These engines don't have hydraulic lifters, they have a bucket and shim system for valve clearances. Might be time to get the clearances checked to see if they are within specs.

It would be advisable to get the timing belt done at the same time, as if I remember correctly the cams have to come off to change the shims if needed to bring clearances back to spec.

Thanks for everyones input. I will try what everyone suggests and come back to report my findings. Disappointed with the engine / gearbox combo would be my fair assessment. Plenty of scope for Ford to improve the Fiesta. I hope they are listening!! Does anyone have a manual on the engine?

Hi guys,

Just wanted to clarify, selecting reverse on these manual boxes isn't an issue as such, more the fact that there is no syncro on the reverse gear. Giving the gearbox a couple of seconds before selecting reverse will avoid this as a couple of members have mentioned.

cheers,
Julza

Hi Julza I totally understand your explanation re gearbox but seriously its not 1985 you would think Ford could use a brtter gearbox. They had it right in the Escort. It never suffered the same gearbox issue as 2010 fiesta. The problem is drivers now have to change the driving style So much so everyone thinks its faulty.

The gearbox doesn't even have a fill/drain point on it, so I can see this becoming a serious issue at around 200,000km.

My wife's WQ Fiesta (120k km) has exactly the same tappity noise at start up. I'm thinking of changing oil as well to see if that helps. It is going in for a timing belt in a few months, so while it's in there, I'll get them to check and adjust the valve clearance as well.

Is it 'normal' for there to be a few seconds of tappet noise on cold start for these 1.6 engines? We're going to buy a WQ as a second car, and one of my checks is to have a listen at cold start. If it is normalish, how long is acceptable? Cheers.
