Default 2lt engine build

Gday, new to the site.just a few questions here
im building a 2 lt for my mk2 escort id like some opinions on what sort of things make these motors go with out turbo and such. The things i have in mind is block decked and bored 40 tho, crome rings and balanced and polished crank, head shaved with oversized vales ported and polished, big cam, extractors and 45mm side draft solex carbs. What do you guys think about this? and also what sort of ignition do i need.

i look foward to your comments, cheers.

you'll only need 45's for a race spec engine (depends how big you make your ports, valves and cam).

40's will work well with low-mid range torque and still flow up to 160 ish hp, 45's will take you up to 200+, but don't expect idle below 1500 and torque below 4000.

webers are easier to tune than solex - sidedrafts are easier to find than downs (but harder to fit in escort bay (is doable thou). try alfa wreckers for 40s (webers and dellortos were std fitment to gtvs)

you can't have too good ignition - so definitely get electronic (scorcher is good) and is worth looking at programmable ignition map for drivability and power (eg run a cheap computer without the injection)

Thank you very much mate, i have a set of solex side draft 40s here to go on it because webers are just so expensive.ill upgrade it later, any modifications you need to do to the strut tower to fit them in or remove the battery to the boot? better know because i am painting the engine bay this weekend. id really like a fair bit of guts off the mark and through the gears not to concerned with top end speed,(the speed limit is 100 anyway lol)

actually - if you are using pinto, you might not have a drama (was mentally thinking BDA, which is a tight as fit with carbs on RHS). will depend onthe manifold and aircleaner box, but should be plenty of room on LHS of bay

another option is to look at an efi manifold setup from a later model...they are floating around in Aust or look into one from the UK, I run twin 45's on my rally car, sounds fantastic and goes well but if you intend to use it on the road depending on your age of your Escort emmissons can be an issue running twins on a car later than 1976 (I'm sure someone more qualified will know more)

anyway just another option you can look into......

For the money that your going to spend why not consider a Zetec 2 ltr. You start with 130bhp and with a few simple cheap mods can get around 160bhp. A far better and advanced engine than the pinto. Theres sum fantastic write ups on this engine conversion with in these forums. Not sure how to post links so go to the Technical pages and youll find it. Very Very interesting
Remember pintos are only good to about 6500rpm. if that

I would also be keeping the overbore to the next possible clean-up iof the bore - gives you a bit more to play with when it comes to the next rebuild and avoids sleeving. DHLA Dellortos would be better over the weber and solex as the bits are a little more common - I know it is a personal choice however the Dellorto's have an infinite range of tuning variables with emulsion tubes/main jets/idle jets where the webers are a little more limited in your choice. Webers also are a little more expensive and really I cant see the justification purely on a "bling" factor.

45 DHLA's would be way too big for a 2 litre motor unless you have it choked down and personally I would be hunting about for a set of DHLA 40's or the similar n the Weber. Unless you are running a cam that is going to give you good airflow, the 45's in either will struggle to atomise the fuel and it will run very roughly. the sidedraught in either carb rely on the air velocity to get the fuel through the carbs uel circuit and the pump jets can only supply the fuel for the firsy 1000-1500rpm before the fuel circuit takes over. With both carbs also, it can take you hours to get it balanced taking into account things like if you are running a brake booster, pcv and recovery systems for oil/engine vapour returns.

Look closely at the letter AFTER the DHLA on the carb body - the ones you ideally want are the ones without a letter after - the DHLA "F" and "G" variants were emission carbs for the more modern Alfas. You can still get them to work however it may involve drilling the holes under the small screw covers...

I will hunt for a book I have in the garage - it is a Hammilll book which outlines the pro's and con's of both carbs and also has basic setup jetting for a variety of engines.

Leave the Solex carbs alone as also with the Hitachi imitations - they are poop and parts are rare as rocking horse poo. With the Webers and the Dellortos, you may have to get stuff in from O/S as they are in demand. If you see bits like chokes, rebuild kits and the likes, snap them up - but only after you decide on what YOU want to put in your car. I prefer the DHLA as they look the ducks guts and as I said they are more tuneable - in saying this I mean they allow for a much finer tune closer to what you want them to do. Webers will get you in the ballpark however you then may have to micro-drill bits to get your weber to work on your car - once you drill jets and tubes, they cant be un-drilled...lol

In any case - sounds like you want that sidedraught sound.....once you have that in your head, you will never go back!! I will hunt down the book and try to scan it for you(please remind me if I forget!!):sm_headba
