Default My browser hijacked!!

When searching for mp3s on the Net (honest!), about 4 pop-up screens opened up. I managed to close them all down except one, which has now made itself my default home page. I can't change that in the internet options, and likewise, if I type any address into the address bar, the browser (IE) won't open them. I'm assuming this is some kind of spyware?

Anyone know how I can return IE to its normal state? :

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

This should fix up spyware problems and return IE to its normal state....

Then get Mozilla Firefox for your internet browser

this will happen with IE when looking up illegal web sites, such as prorn or mp3 sites. first things first, stop using IE and get firefox, then you will have no problems with popups, hijackings etc, secondly, download microsoft anti-spyware and spybot to get rid of the spyware.

how can you use the internet without anti-spyware or a virus scanner? your just asking for trouble.

Get Spybot and Adaware also. Or in my case, Spybot, Adaware, Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005, CCleaner, MS Antispyware, Spyware Blaster and System Mechanic Pro, lol.

Personally I wouldn't touch the Microsoft anti-spyware with a barge pole. They have never been able to secure IE without an almost complete loss in functionality.

And you are loading an from a company hell bent on having complete control of your update regime. XP Service pack two for example. Half your software stop but it is marginally more secure. And have a look at Bill's latest gem "Windows genuine advantage". Have a look at that one before you next OP system upgrade.

What you need to do is make sure you have up to date anti-virus and anti-spyware apps loaded, but these will at this point probably not remove the Hijack.

A google search for the "name of the hijack page" + removal should take you to several sites with removal how-to.

And never click on any buttons of an unknown and un-requested popup, just because it says No or close doesn't meen that is what is going to happen. Close popups from the taskbar or via the "X" in the top right hand corner.

What is the Hijacker?

MS Anti-Spyware only monitors IE though... bear that in mind if you are using Firefox.... I'm using Spybot.

just wondering if Firefox thingy is so good why do you still need spyware programmes. Though I don't go to illegal sites that I know of, I have IE,use SpywareBlaster,Ad-Aware,Spybot and Microsofts own and all of these things still catch different hijack attempts and I almost never get pop ups except the microsoft onesf rom their own programme. You can never have enough of these sorts of programmes it seems.

Microsoft didn't actually write it, but rather it was acquired when they took over a company recently.

A good review of it here:

M$crosoft never write anything innovative! They just buy out innovative companies. I'm not saying the product is now good, just warning be careful where it may head.

My concern is letting M$crosoft near any filtering technology, next you know you'll only be browsing M$crosoft sites. Remembder the M$icrosoft network, or look at what IE does default with NineMSN.

Ok, I do actually have Norton Internet Security 2005 on my machine, but I only got the motherboard replaced last Friday and when I fired it up that arvo my user account had to be set up again (icons, shortcuts, email addresses etc). The firewall and anti-virus were two of the things that didn't start up automatically! :jab:

I'm on my work laptop at the moment, so I'll download AntiSpyWare and install it when I get home.

I'm using Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy at the moment and they fail to pick up a LOT of stuff. These were recommended to me by a lot of people. I've formatted this laptop 4 times so far, just because of spyware. As I'm typing now, there's shit popping up and I'm loading another page which is taking ages because of the spyware.

I have task manager running, there are two spyware and adware programs running which I can't close.

Everything on this thread that says 'spyware' is linked to another search page by spyware. This doesn't only happen with this word but always happens with other words such as bed, sex, drugs, shopping, betting, bets etc. etc.

I think that's a fair spyware problem.

Can anyone post any sites or direct links to downloads? I might take my flash drive to uni tmrw and download shitloads of anti-spyware shit.

It sucks ***, I can't tell you how much it does!

God I am going to HATE getting a windows laptop when I change jobs in about two weeks. I figure i'll be installing some variant of Linux on it as a primary OS and then booting in to Windows when i need it.

I haven't used an MS product prior to Windows 2000 SP1 and had none of these issues.
