brakes lock, why???

hey guys, just a quick question, ive got a manual ea, with a limited slip diff, and to the point... i downshift as i approach a red light, 3rd to 2nd at 70km/ph, 2nd to 1st at bout 40km/ph, and the brakes lock for a bees extension of a second, sometimes they squeak twice, and the tyres and brakes are perfect, bout 90% tread on all tyres, why is this happening??

any help much appreciated

Too much rear brake when stopping..Remember weight transfers to the front when stopping ...

no thats the thing
im not using any brake to slow down. only gears.
when i change down to 1st at about 40km/ph, the brakes lock for a millisecond,
if its in the wet, i may keep slipping

Its called compression braking. Its actually the engine locking the rear wheels as you let the clutch out on the downshift. might try being smoother (match the revs when you downshift by giving the throttle a blip while you're in neutral) to eliminate this and extend the life of your diff/gearbox/clutch. You should pretty much not shift into first while moving at more than 20km/h or so anyway.

What are the cogs like for EAs? is 40 a little fast to change back to 1st?

What he said. Compression lock up is pretty hard on the drivetrain, if you're gonna be doing that sorta thing, a bit of the old double shuffle might be the go. You'll find that it feels a lot smoother as well once you get the hang of it.

Gears are for going not slowing.
I would only use the gearbox to slow down if I really need to stop in a hurry.

Brakes are cheaper than drivetrain components

I agree with gammaboy, id say your just gearing down too early.
