Default Upgrading to BBM

Ok I've got a few questions about upgrading ea-ed to use the ef-el broadband intake manifold.

Now as long as it has smartlock its best to upgrade to an el ecu to control the bbm isn't it? Does this effect anything else (ie. i've heard it stuffs up the trip computer) do you need to add anything else to make it work properly different wiring looms etc? Do you need different wiring for the bbm itself?

Also I've heard you can keep the ea-ed ecu in and use an rpm switch to control the bbm instead?

So whats the best way to do it? Any tips? Has anyone done a tutorial anywhere?

Dude... I know antony from ALTED performance is working on a bi-pass so that el ecu can be used on non-smartlock e-series. At the moment, try using an rpm switch, at like 3600rpm?.? Atm ive got my zip tied shut...lol

Yeah, I've done quite a few BBM installs ... if you have an EB2/ED the EL ECU just plugs straight in .. , But yes, the range on the trip computer does not work,

You can use your EB2/ED intake loom and cut the wires for the TPS/ISC etc, and rejoin them because the wire lenghs are different.

Best way to to use the EL ecu, to trigger the BBM .. its not as hard has it sounds.

yeah my car is an EB2 with smartlock so i'll go the EL ecu option then.. i have a trip computer but not too worried about it not working.

sounds like its fairly straight forward.. thanks for the advice au2low

I also want to do this conversion, would running an EL ecu be worse than the EB XR ecu that I have now? I only ask this because I know the XR ecu is slightly different than the other Falcons and I don't want to downgrade my performance!

You trip comp will stuff up with the EL ECU, figures will be way out.

You can use an RPM switch, but you don't get the fuel maps to match.

And for those of you with them cable tied up, you have them in long runner mode, which is for low end. If you're only using one I'd suggest short runners.

When i did this with tibbo the car ran way better with the eecIv and have it tied the runner zip tied up. It had heaps more pickup, with the eecV it was like the conversion was never done. i used an el ecu and wired up the bbm to switch via the ecu, very easy to do. But i had better results using the old ecu, i would recommend trying both out.

Ok other than it looking pretty, from what ive been told the ed setup flows alot better. I do understand you get minimal increase in torque, but thats about it.

Is it really worth the hassle? Do you plan to keep it n/a?

i'm putting an au bottom end in with au belt setup and keeping it n/a .. so yeah its worth changing to bbm. probably minimal performance gains.. but need the bbm so it doesnt get in the way of the belts. also it looks better, and you can have the cool pipes that go from the thottle body to airbox.. also i think i'm going to use the bpt ba pod setup for my cold air intake... got it all planned!

It's all low end torque, nothing changes above 3700 RPM.

Yeah interested sundeep. I'll be looking at buying one in a couple of weeks.. one question though do you need ef/el wiring loom/plug part for it.. or do you just need to make the eb loom longer?

The eb loom will fit but you will need to use the EF/L TPS (I think EB use the same so this shouldn't matter) plug on your loom, and the ISC one if you use the EF ISC. The EA one works fine. I find if you use a EF one in a EA it holds the revs up for ages and brings 'em down slowly.

You can't use the EF/L loom as the transmission wiring etc. is on the same loom which has a big **** off connector.

Using cable ties would of hindered top end power. You'd get a torque increase though.

And DON'T use an EA-ED ISC, you'll probably end up with a dent in your bonnet.

to me power at top felt about the same, but as you said much better torque. Would the compression ratio differnce between early e-series to later make much differnce to the ecu fuel tables and whatnot.

The BBM is a very worthwhile mod, increase in power below 3800rpm is substantial, in the order of 40nm. Above 3800rpm the performance is virtually identical.

An EL ECU is essential because not only does it switch the VSV (which in turn operates the butterflies within the BBM), it also changes fuel maps, AND timing maps.
Timing is the key here as you will only ever have a compromise between long runners and short runners with the wrong ECU.

BTW, the ED manifold does not flow better, they are just easier to use in turbo applications as it makes plumbing easier, nothing more.

In a NA setup, it's difficult to improve on the BBM.

check this for a comparison of a worked engine using the BBM in the normal fassion, or with just the short runners being used.

for me with pre-smartlock eecIV i got a good increase in toruque & top end unchanged running constant vacum to the bbm switch (long runners)
but i stooged myself with the cai.
