Default Problems starting and rough idling EL

Hello,

My EL on gas sometimes starts ok and other times it will start cranking and then just stop. Or sometimes when you turn the key nothing happens, turn the key off then on again and starts ok. Tried moving the auto shifter with no difference.

When it does start it isnt smooth, it more of a jump and cough.

Once idling it seems ok but will then idle rough for a little then come good then idle rough then come good and so on and so on and....

Goes great once on the open road.

Thought about changing plugs, leads and dizzy cap but would appreciate any other ideas before I start spending money. Anyone had anything similar.

Cheers, Bob

Does your starting problem alter if it's a northerly wind as opposed to a southerly? Or when the car has been sitting idle or has recently been running. This could be temperature related. Just tell your girlfriend you need to buy a new one and it's buggered.

Does it do this when starting on gas or petrol, or both? If its petrol, I'd say your up for a fuel pump. Can be quite common. Other wise could be injectors, or air filter, or spark plugs.

Thanks for the replys. I would have to say that it idles rough more often then smooth. The problem with the start occurs all the time even when engine is hot. Auto box but shifter makes no difference, idles about 750 rpm. Headwind and tailwind no difference. Fuel economy is fine and no smoke.
