I must have passed 20 of them on my trip to and back from Sydney.
Is this system just for trucks, or can cars get booked speeding point-to-point? |

Just for trucks, time travelled between check points is monitored and registered at weigh bridges

It's been that way for years. No reason for it to change any time soon.

Yes mainly for trucks but have been known for rego checks on cars as well. When i was an interstate driver put that question to the R.T.A and thats they told me.

+1 re registration checks. NSW Privacy Commissioner received complaints from folk who had received 'please explain' correspondence from RTA as to why their car was driving unregistered on XX road, XX date.
Letter would then highlight the penalties. Folk should know that the NSW Safe T Cam system is also in SA. Each state has data matching swap legislation in relation to info gained from the camera system. Whilst its primarily heavy vehicles the system targets, it has been capable of reading motorcycle plates since early 1995. The system at some locations in NSW, forms part of the point to point camera net, particularly those up on the new sections of Pacific Highway upgrade.

they only went for trucks only when it was implemented, but as usual that was the thin edge of the wedge.
The technology is now much more advanced and I read an article earlier in the year in the Australian newspaper which stated that the current technology can read about 200x the number of plates compared to the original and they NSW RTA were thinking of using it to measure point to point for ALL vehicles. This will happen sooner rather than later...

The RTA does not have the power (yet) to book cars or Trucks for speeding. But they can, and do, ban the Truck from travelling in NSW.
