I guess enough of us are staying under the speed limit so they need to look elsewhere now to make up the missing dollars they got used to taking from us

With the technology that allows police cars to scan plates on the move this will be a huge money maker!

Im all for this. If the fine has been increased, there clearly is an issue with people driving unregistered vehicles. Can only imagine how many of those are also uninsured too.

Trouble is those that flog the rules cant pay the fines so finish up serving 'community service work' basiclly sitting on butts doing as little as possible and getting their fine paid off. Its the biggest shonky Ive ever heard of.
For petes sake gov officails get real hit these sods where it hurts, remove their cars off the road until fine paid. I used to watch RBT and other pokice shows but would end up fuming at total disrespect idiots have for law and ownership.

The cost of registration is quite often well above the value of some of the heaps out on the roads so the muppets driving them just keep going until the cops catch them and then walk away, they don't pay the fines either!!

It's about $1300 in NSW.....$650 for unreg + $650 for uninsured (CTP)

They really should have a compulsory roadworthy for vehicles.
perhaps over certain age or kilometres. In the UK drivers licence, rego, COF & insurance are all linked. without one your car is not legal. They have testing stations In NZ for their WOF its a quick easy process.

Not sure if SA has yearly road worthies however WA does not and a HUGE percentage of shoddy cars (in Perth generally). Mainly small cars driving with low tyre pressure (we call em beach pressures) and a lot are bald aswell as it rains maybe 6 times a year and people don't seem to care.
Saw a Camry the other day with full on slick tyres, ripped up door trims and what wasn't ripped was missing, this thing is nasty and it's getting around. But the cops will still pick on enthusiasts and RWD sedans. Unregoed vehicles just doesn't seem to be a big problem. Sounds like revenue raising yet again seeing as the tech is there for easy money.

Nope, no annual checks in SA.
I had a car sitting for nearly 15 years and, while looking to move it on, I was surprised to see that it was as easy as a couple of mouse clicks to re-register it if required. All fine if you are doing the right thing, but just as easy to put a death trap back on the road. |

If the penalty in Vic is the same cost as rego then that is hardly a deterrent.
One thing on my wish list is 6 month rego splitting the cost which may reduce the number of unregistered vehicles on the road. Do many other states have 6 month rego? Bill

Nsw has that option. Its a convenient thing to use only once, and that's to put your comprehensive insurance renewel 6 months away from your rego and green slip

I disagree, I forgot to pay my rego a few years back, the day after it expired I got pulled over, that day it cost me, I'm pretty sure it was $720, to drive to work, then had to pay the rego fee, so $1500 in 1 day, Granted it's not what other states are paying but I can guarantee I won't miss it again

Talking to a mate who's a traffic cop, said while driving a camera car picked 9 unregistered vehicles in one day, some hadn't been registered for up to 10 months.

Three, six and twelve month rego options in WA.
They can and do confiscate cars for unreg or unlicenced now, they're all listed in the notices section of the West Australian paper once a week. Vehicle type and rego number(if its got one) Theres always fifty odd vehicles listed its staggering... Most of them are all 90's bangers, probably picked up unreg. Don't see too many hoon cars, although a Clubsport with the rego 'Noisy R8' was listed a while back, haha wonder why he was there... Confiscation is a good idea, the old fine was a joke, it used to be $250 for a first offence, it was only a paper ticket, no court appearance necessary.

Any vehicle that is unregistered is also uninsured.

Main issue, at least in WA, is they don't give you a sticker any more, so no visual clue your rego has expired.
I know it's your responsibilty but why no stickers. Crickey, they'd only cost a dollar to manufacture, and for what we pay, $300 for 6 months or thereabouts surely they could do a sticker. So many average Mum and Dads get caught out.

I didn't know cops had mates And to the guy who got busted for no rego a day after it expired - you use to get 28 days grace - the cop could fine you, but if it was paid within the 28 days a simple letter would cancel that. I can see why they changed it - Think of the funding they'd miss out on with cameras, you all deserve to pay more. Next they'll take your rego sticker away as a "cost saving initiative". (But in reality it'll be to make it harder to remember when to pay your rego. Same modus operandi that a certain political party used used in Germany before the war. (small steps no one notices, but the cumulative effect after several years is much larger then any one small step) |

Yes I don't get the no sticker thing either.
Every car should still have a registration sticker displayed as a visual indication and easy check. Like company cars and the like, how do the employees know the cars are registered??

No stickers in NSW either, but I currently have two cars, a bike and two trailers registered plenty of people have more than this, and I will probably have another car soon as well.
Would be a lot easier to keep track if they had labels.

NSW can check on line in 2 minutes.
Maybe just buy a pack of 1000 white stickers from the $2 shop and write the rego date on it... You can then put a sticker on the light switch to remember the electricity bill too... Last edited by Stefan; 16-11-2016 at 09:07 PM. |

Make you're own sticker if you need the visual reminder.
I never checked my rego stickers because I always remembered what the expiry date is. But yeah it's still a bit harsh a $2500 fine for being a few days out of rego. For the people who don't care and drive unregestered for months or years, I'm all for the massive fines. |
