Finally my car gets some more mods.

This weekend I had a bit of a splurge on the car. It needed it since I have barely spent a dollar on it for about 6 months.

First thing to go was the exhaust. I have been putting up with this thing for ages. It's an old Genie 2.5" system that had had it's day a long time ago. Whenever I used to drive with the window down I'd get fumed out from the exhaust leaks, and it used to rattle all the time which sounded sh1thouse outside the car. So I booked it in to have a Redback 2.5" system fitted. And I'm bloody happy! I got the system with the 2 mufflers cause I'm over the whole loud car thing. It's got a nice note and should just be legal ;) Didn't get a exhaust tip this time, just got him to cut the pipe a bit further under the bar for that fully sick stocker look.

I also bought some Pacemaker Comp series extractors off ebay last week so I'll get them put on next weekend, and probably a new cat while I'm at it.

The rest of my weekend was spent putting the new Skyline 3.9 diff gears in. Getting the diff out was the easy part, undoing the pinion bolt was a bit of fun to say the least. As was doing it up. Overall it wasn't too difficult and it was probably a days work all up. Took the car for a quick spin before but went easy on it just to make sure everything was working ok. The diffs a bit noisier than before when your doing 70k's and up but you have to expect that with 3.9's. I'm gonna take it out a bit later, i'll let you'se know how it goes. All up the diff cost me under $100 and the exhaust $250. Thanks to Bass_Crazy for giving me some tips for building the diff.

Well just took it for an extended spin ;) Goes good, rips skids pretty easy, speedo's way out but it's a bit too noisy for my liking. Sounds like I have mud tyres on when you free-wheel. Acceleration is ok, just a tiny bit noisy. I have a feeling the pinion gear needs to sit back a bit from the crownwheel. That'll be another day's work so might just put up with it for now.

Oh and Damo, I'll get round to the engine soon ;) Just tossing up wether to buy a second hand XR6 motor or build a 4.0 with a new bottom end.

but seriously, is there an easy way to check it? I noticed when I was putting it together that when I bolted the brackets in that go over the LSD center bearing cups if I torqued them right up the whole gear assembly became harder to turn like the gears were pressing into each other too much. I used the original shim plus the one from the skyline. They were the same thickness and probably added up to about 1.5-2mm all up.

hahaha no wonder it's noisey. I forget how to check depth, I'm sure I'd remember if it wasn't late on a Sunday night. To check tooth contact you need some bearing blue, you put it on the pinion teeth and turn the whole thing to check where the teeth contact. Other wise you'll wear the teeth out in no time at all.

Did you preload everything properly or just whack it together lol? You've got the factory workshop manual? That's got all the details in it, to be honest I haven't looked that hard, I will when I build a diff soon.

haha @ backyard styles. My t5 conversion lasted for a week. Got a CCC and an E-Series meet in that time, beat sunny too. :P Now I need a new flywheel and maybe a clutch. It's Jacks mechanics fault.

mine lasted a year+ whiney from day one, and using the weakest ford diff known to man, a 2pin lsd with big shims!

Yeah i got the ford manual, had to improvise with a few of the tools though ;) My diff housing spreader was a mallet and a screwdriver lol.

I preloaded the pinion bearings, they're all sweet. I roughly checked the teeth with my own brand of bearing blue - diff oil :hihi: It's really only noisy on deceleration. Maybe I'll check it next weekend....but i'm tipping the CBF factor will be pretty high.

i see alot of people put skyline gears in. Are they heaps easier to get than falcon ones?

3.9 is pretty damn high..what about the usual 3.45 or 3.7?

ust take your diff to a diff shop lol much more satisfying it it goes properly. It's not like you'r going to be building a couple of difs a year no need to learn how to do it ;)

As for the diff, the CBF factor is very high! I'm going to buy a 3.23 LSD from the wreckers - backyard stylez install too

Pintara & skylines had 4.11, 3.9 & 3.7 IIRC

So nissan R31 diffs were Borg Warners aswell? (is that the company?..pretty sure it is)

screw that. it's like a grand to get a diff built with 3.9's. I bet they don't even replace the bearings or anything either. Who's gonna know? Plus I'd prefer to know how to do it, you never know how many diffs I'm going to have to build this year lol!
