Moving to Australia from USA what Car/truck should I bring for easy resale

hey folks my work is bringing me to Australia from the USA in the next few months someone had mentioned that there are some sought after cars/trucks amongst other things that are wanted/needed and difficult to get in Australia. I am wondering has anybodey any info or a website I can go to to get more information about what I should ship (my company is paying for the shipping but Im selling my car so I might as well ship something that I coulds sell to make some cash)

Its a good idea.

It might depend on state to state; it might be the one country but there are usually many different laws for the same thing (dont get me started, that annoys the bejesus out fo me).

Guess it all depends on the cash you have to buy something over there. You then have to add a few different taxes I assume.

If you were coming to Victoria, then Vicroads are the people to talk to.

in order to import a car to australia under personal import laws.. you must have owned the car overseas for atleast 12 months....

which means if you buy a car now.. you wouldn't be able to bring it with you.. unless you got it all converted to right hand drive etc.. and other compliance issues... not sure how it all works if the car is older then 1988... different laws yet again...

so all in all.. i doubt it would really be worth it...

Parts are a different matter, bringing a crap load of aftermarket goodies would be a good idea me thinks

also if you bring in a car/truck from the States, you have to own it in Australia for 2 years before you can sell it as well.
there are ways around it, but it isnt cheap and isnt really worth it in the end.

I would go the pickup, a mid 90s Silverado still fetches $30,000 in Australia!!! 2002 F250s are getting $50k+ If you ship something like a 2002 Chevy Duramax, you will make money on it providing you can do the convertion at a good price. It would cost you $18,000 US and you could sell it for about $60k-70k in Australia no problem.

The main problem in australia is that in order to register a car for road use it either has to be converted to RHD (expensive, not always possible) or, if left in LHD form, it has to be at least 30 years old.

Demand for muscle cars in Australia has gone through the roof, so your best prospects are probably pre-1977 muscle cars, like "proper" Mustangs, 'Vettes, Dodge Chargers, etc. You should check out the Australian muscle car sites to see what models are attracting the best dollars.

Bring over a dodge charger, 67-9 camaro, or anything like that. People will pay rediculous money for them here.

As a few have said, anything over 30 years old can be registered LHD and would be your best (and safest) bet. A muscle car will give you the best return. Things like Mustang fastbacks, Camaros & Corvettes are popular here.

U.S. cars built between 77 and 88 are not as popular and you will have to convert them to RHD, in fact, I can't think of any car in that year range that's popular here other than maybe a Corvette but the market is flooded with those at the moment - so I wouldn't do it.

Any car built after January 1, 1989 will be almost impossible (or extremely difficult - read costly) to get registered here due to our RAWS rules on imports. Unless you've owned and used it for over two years in the USA before bringing it here.

My mates old man was working in the U.S for 2 years and brought back a corvette, not to sell but for his fun car. He is allowed to keep it left hand drive but if he wants to sell it he has to convert it to right hand drive. or something along those lines.

i suspect unless the car is worth a bit of money it will probably turn out to be a PITA with all the car Import Laws we have.

Don't bring cars, bring F-Series gearboxes!! Get small block and big block 5 speed ZF manual gearboxes from the later trucks, they sell for crazy dollars here compared to what you pay there! A $500-1000 gearbox sells for minimum $3-5K. People sell the weaker Mazda boxes for $3k that you guys throw away! Bring a couple for me!

what this about not being able to register cars here which are less than 30 yrs old?
i live in alice & we have the joint defence facility, pine gap, and alot of the americans bring their cars over which are extremely new! in fact i saw a black escalade a few weeks ago with NT plates!

Dodge challenger, Superbee, daytona, GTX, etc.

Don't bring a Trans Am or a StingRay as there are a few in circulation and selling one isn't easy.

Pretty Much anything with a Big Block or a Hemi will sell well.
