"The first month of new car sales figures of 2018 released by the federal chambers of automotive industries tells a very familiar story.
Toyota's HiLux was again the top selling vehicle with 3860 units moved, while the Ford Ranger was again second best with 3260 sales.
While no other dual-cab ute managed to make the top 10, the light commercial segment still enjoyed a strong start to the year with whole market up by just more than 20 per cent compared to the same month last year. This was due to several large improvements by the Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton as well as the two sales leaders.
The Mazda3 (3201) took the early bragging rights in the passenger car stakes leading the Toyota Corolla (2776) and Hyundai i30 (1850).
Mazda's SUVs had a strong month with the mid-size Mazda CX-5 (2152) and CX-3 (1582) city SUV both appearing in the top 10 and topping the respective segments.
SUVs as whole had a strong month in January with a 10.9 per cent increase on last January, this continues the trend seen throughout the last few years as buyers shed traditional passenger cars in favour of high-riding wagons.
On the back of this strong growth were solid sales of the Toyota RAV4 (1780) and Nissan X-Trail (1668). Hyundai's Tucson (1420) and Honda CR-V (1474) were also both knocking on the door of the top 10 sellers.

The Volkswagen Golf (1629) improved its performance compared to January last year with almost 25 per cent more sales.
Two notable absentees from the first top 10 sellers of the year were two former locally-made stalwarts: the Holden Commodore and the Toyota Camry with each falling well short of 1000 sales with 871 and 754 registrations respectively.
Both large and medium car segments are down considerably which continues the decline of nthe traditional family car in Australia.
Luxury carmaker has mixed success in January with Mercedes-Benz and Lexus both up about 9 and 7 per cent respectively, but Audi was down by more than 20 per cent from last year, while BMW was flat.

Does it really matter ? Is there a bonus payment to the manufacturer for being no 1?
It's interesting to see what the pattern is in relation to the types of vehicles sold as a comparison to styles but in the real world it's not like a new car buyer is going to base their purchase on where their car lands in the top 10 list. For example the Camry / commodore numbers would be very low as both company's are only clearing remaining stock before selling their new models so makes perfect sence their numbers will drop dramatically,
In victoria, Camry and Colorado numbers are going to jump significantly over the coming months as they are now the replacement general duties police vehicles. There's my prediction for February, March and April

i've never known anyone who buys a car based on if its won car of the year, but that says more about my circle of friends then it does about what the general population does.

not really ef falcon, just means that for both our comments, my previous point is probably closer to the truth, in a real world purchase, a small minority care if the car they are buying is a top seller or has won a award, they buy what they like, what suits their lifestyle, needs & affordability, awards & being the top seller are not as important.
If I was going out to by a car tomorrow, I'd want a 5.0 Mustang, crash rating, sales performance or awards mean nothing to me, my happiness behind the wheel does.

The vast majority of car buying public are not car people, they have no idea of what's good, bad or indifferent. Make no mistake, when ranger for corolla or 3 makes number 1 for the month wine corks pop in the head office, as your brand is afforded credibility, as a consumer we see there is safety in numbers.

It meant something in the 80s/90s when there was just Wheels or NRMAs COTY competition. But there are so many online car review sites and mags are a thing of the past pretty much, that awards are rather meaningless now. Other than JD Power (which isnt particularly relevant to us), there probably isnt any organisation that stands out as any sort of yardstick.

440 sales is still pretty good remembering that Falcon was around that level in the last few years.

Ford has some inventory to see it through to the new car in the second half of this year,
there are discounts to keep interest there but most certainly, buyers are holding off
for the 2018 Mustang.
